This Is How the Hippocampus Works in Our Brains!

By Abdulrazak Madi | Project Leader

Have you ever noticed how the songs sung to us in childhood never really fade? The gentle lullabies whispered by our mothers or softly hummed by our fathers as they held us close remain etched in our memories. They resurface suddenly, even after many years, bringing a smile to our faces and filling our hearts with the warmth, safety, and love we once felt as if we were little again, nestled safely in their arms.

When I learned that the hippocampus, the region of the brain responsible for storing such deep emotions and long-term memories, preserves these feelings, a thought came to me that I couldn’t ignore:

What about the children who lost their parents too soon? What does their hippocampus hold? Do they have warm songs or safe memories to bring them back to a peaceful childhood like other children do?

Sadly... the answer is likely no! And this is heartbreaking.

But what eases this sadness is the fact that today, thanks to your generous donations, we are able to weave new memories for Syria’s orphans, memories that they might one day recall with joy and a gentle smile.

They may remember the psychosocial support sessions that gave them a safe space to speak freely, the student activities that broadened their horizons and strengthened their confidence, the academic guidance that acted as a true compass, directing them toward the best paths for their abilities and dreams.

In this way, thanks to your giving, we are creating new pathways in their minds, strengthening their skills, nurturing their determination, and preparing them for a better future, all while caring for their young hearts with continuous emotional support.

And you are there with them, through your donations, your hands, though distant, are filling their hippocampus with feelings of safety, gratitude, and hope helping to create beautiful memories that will stay with them for a lifetime.

And you can still continue giving shaping joyful memories for another child who is waiting for hope.
