Educate a Girl, Educate a Nation - Sierra Leone

One of the challenges girls face in Sierra Leone is the threat of Malaria.  Thanks in part to your ongoing support, mosquito nets are distributed to girls throughout the year. Mariama, a junior secondary school student from Gulf International Secondary School, was very thankful for the mosquito she recently received. 

Long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) aka mosquito nets are a proven way to prevent mosquitoes from biting students at night. By providing girls like Mariama, with mosquito nets, you are helping them stay healthy and in school where they can continue their education.

In today's digital age, basic computing skills are crucial and your generosity continues to support the FAWE All-Girls Computer Lab in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The computer lab provides 133 girls, ages 8-14, with invaluable access to computer technology and digital skills training.

Some of the fundamental computing skills, these young girls are being trained in include:

1. Keyboard Proficiency: Efficient typing and familiarity with keyboards are foundational skills that enable young girls to communicate, create, and collaborate efficiently. Key aspects include:

• Touch Typing: Learning to type without looking at the keyboard, improving speed and accuracy.
• Keyboard Shortcuts: Understanding and using shortcuts for common actions (e.g., copy, paste, undo) to enhance productivity.
• Text Formatting: Basic knowledge of formatting tools (bold, italic, underline) in word processing software for creating and editing documents.

2. Mouse Navigation: Mastering mouse navigation is crucial for interacting with graphical user interfaces (GUIs) and digital environments. Skills include:

• Pointing and Clicking: Developing precision in pointing and clicking to navigate menus, buttons, and links.
• Scrolling: Using scroll bars and gestures to navigate content within documents and web pages.
• Drag and Drop: Understanding how to move and arrange elements on the screen using drag-and-drop functionality.

3. Basic Software Knowledge: Understanding essential programs such as word processors and spreadsheets equips young girls with practical tools for academic and personal use:

• Word Processors: Creating, formatting, and editing text documents (e.g., Microsoft Word, Google Docs).
• Spreadsheets: Organizing data, performing calculations, and creating charts (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets).
• File Management: Saving, organizing, and retrieving files in a structured manner.

Computer skills empower young girls by giving them the tools to navigate and contribute to the digital world confidently.  Together, we can continue to break down barriers and create opportunities for girls to thrive academically and beyond.
