A focus on gaming addiction and internet safety

With 2022 well underway, we are planning how to restart our Child Protection programme again. Schools in Cambodia are fully open, and Peru looks like it will follow suit once the summer vacation finishes, so we are excited about what this will bring!

Cambodia

Schools in Cambodia opened at the end of last year and classes are now back in full swing, both at state schools and our own Helping Hands. However, focus has been on academic subjects, sports and extra-curricular activities for now, to help children get back into a routine and catch up with schoolwork. As the situation settles, our teams are working on plans to reintegrate the child safety modules back into regular scheduling.

Peru

Schools in Peru are closed for summer vacation, but the government has been heavily promoting vaccination of school-aged children. The hope is that in-person classes will start again next month. In the meantime, Picaflor House continues offering 2-hour sessions of education support to 20 pupils at a time. Although the Child Safety Module hasn’t yet been reintegrated into the Picaflor House timetable yet – for the same reasons as in Cambodia – we do have a special programme happening in March.

Volunteers Joanne Steinberg and Jorge Delrio will be joining us at Picaflor House next month, to run a workshop about video game addiction and internet safety. Joanne and Jorge are a husband-and-wife team, experienced in promoting the safe use of internet and helping Latin American communities to combat the problem of online gaming addiction. They will deliver training sessions to our staff team, parents and the children of Picaflor House. These workshops help people recognize the signs of gaming addiction and learn how to prevent/combat it, as well as promoting safe use of the internet. The Picaflor House team has coordinated with the Municipal Government, so these workshops will also be offered to the wider community, through the local school and health center.

We understand that in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, protecting our children is even more important than ever. We are excited about the possibilities of 2022 and will update you soon!
