February 2021 Update

Volunteers help teach children how to stay safe

With the Covid-19 pandemic taking an upswing in the last few months around the world, we are having to postpone our Child Protection program further. Without schools being open, we don’t have consistent access to students, and the priority for most government agencies, schools and teachers at the moment is trying to maintain children’s basic education.

Peru

Towards the end of 2020, things were looking, with restrictions being loosened and life heading back towards “normal”. Schools were not among services that reopened though, as we went straight into the summer vacation! We were hopeful that schools – including our own Picaflor House – would be allowed to open again at the start of 2021 school year in March, so that we could really push this program forward. However, this is looking less and less likely, as Peru has been tightening restrictions again. We will continue monitoring the situation and will be ready to go when we are able to open the doors to Picaflor House again. We have also started conversations with the local government, with the ultimate goal of rolling out the Child Protection modules in schools across Cusco.

Cambodia

After schools reopened in September, an increase in Covid-19 cases in Cambodia, led to new closures and countrywide restrictions during the second half of November and December. We were able to welcome students back on site in January and government schools have started up again. However, educators’ efforts are mostly directed towards helping children readjust to the classroom and catch up academically, after more than 6 months off school.

Children in particular have faced many unprecedented challenges in the last year and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. We know that it is more important than ever that we get back to helping empower children to protect themselves, and your support will help us to do this!

Please keep in mind the upcoming Little-by-Little Campaign which will run from 8th to 12th March. GlobalGiving will 50% match every donation under $50 received during that week, and will also 100% match any new recurring donations! We know times are hard, but if you do wish to donate, doing so between 8th and 12th March will help your generosity to go even further!
