Ready to Stop Malaria in its tracks

By Adama Faruk | Project Coordinator 2

Our Children
Our Children

Dear Friends, Family and supporters of Serendipity,

The recent report from the WHO regional Office 2021, Malaria keeps causing deaths of our children in Africa with a figure of 90% cases of Malaria related cases of the global figure and 85% of the global cases are deaths of children under five in Africa. Coming down home to Nigeria, Kano State where we are located has the highest figure of malaria related cases thus making the Federal Ministry of Health to declare a state of emergency in Kano on Malaria. This is a saddening and sorrowful and if we do not do anything soon to curb this the figures could be devastating.

This year’s theme is Ready to beat Malaria and in order to improve on our spread we have invited other stakeholders and written to them to join us and one of the organizations that joined us this year is Orange group makers of a cream that can be rubbed on the skin to protect against malaria bites, it is safe for both adults and children.

Prior to the world Malaria Day we have been on awareness creation on the causal effects of Malaria, how to prevent it through environmental sanitation, sleeping under Insecticide Treated Nets, signs and symptoms of Malaria for both children and pregnant women. Thus on World Malaria week starting from the 24th of April till Friday 28th April we had radio jingles, distribution of 1000 Insecticide treated nets, Malaria tests on over 100 women and children, first line drugs to those that tested positive and distributed creams manufactured by Orange Group our collaborator in three communities of Ungogo Local Governing Council, Kano making a total of 1000 homes covered within this week.

Our partnership with two Radio Stations Arewa Radio and Freedom Radio that airs our jingles on prevention of malaria and the importance of sleeping under ITNS is yielding fruit as we asked the women and children through our data survey if they knew anything about Malaria and about our organization and they responded in the affirmative, the jingles are both in English and the Local Language Hausa in order for us to reach a wider coverage.

A total social mindset change is needed to stop Malaria in its tracks as even though there is a new Vaccine created to keep us Malaria free we need to still keep our surroundings clean and take precautionary measures to keep it at bay. See also our talks to rural communities on how to keep Malaria at bay and stay healthy.

We have achieved our initial target of 500 beneficiaries and exceed it by double the figure of impacting 1000 beneficiaries this first quarter and hope to do more.
