Behind the hunger crisis in Karamoja are children whose dreams should be filled with learning, laughter, friendship, and possibility. Instead, prolonged drought, crop failures, and household food shortages are placing additional burdens on families struggling to meet their children's basic needs.
A child should never have to face the day without adequate food because the rains failed or a family's harvest was destroyed. Yet when drought undermines livelihoods and nutritious food becomes unaffordable, children are among those most vulnerable to its consequences.
The September 2026 IPC assessment estimated that 673,000 people in Karamoja were experiencing Crisis-level food insecurity or worse. The assessment also highlighted serious acute malnutrition concerns affecting young children, reinforcing the need for sustained humanitarian attention.
The Girl Child Foundation Uganda (GIFU) is appealing to the global community to help bring greater attention to the people of Karamoja. Through GlobalGiving, we invite individuals, businesses, philanthropic organizations, and humanitarian partners to support appropriate efforts addressing food insecurity and nutritional vulnerability.
Our collective response must recognize that children need immediate protection as well as a future in which their families can withstand drought and recover from food shortages.
Let us give Karamoja's children more than words of encouragement. Let us stand for their right to nourishment, health, dignity, and opportunity. Together, we can help turn compassion into action and keep hope alive for families facing hunger.
