Hopes of a sixteen year old boy from Nanyuki’s Thingithu Estate of joining a secondary school have been shattered after his mother failed to raise the amount required for fees and other needs.
Roy who was a pupil at Laikipia Air Base primary school where he attained 316 marks was set to join Ngobit Boys secondary school in Laikipia but nothing is forthcoming to show that his dreams of ever joining the school will be realized.
The third born in a family of five whose only bread winner is the mother, he could not even afford the fees required to undergo a rite of passage when his age mate passed this stage Last month and it has taken a group of well wishers to raise funds for the exercise.
The poverty level in his family where they share a single rented room and sleep on a double-decker bed together with his mother Lilian and four other siblings could not even allow him stay there after he was circumcised and a good Samaritan offered part of his store where the boy is being taken care of.
“The boy and his mother had come to look for manual job at my yard when I realized that there was a bigger problem than just looking for job. Upon enquiring they narrated their predicaments and I started looking for people who could help,” said Joseph Kinyua who has offered the house where the boy is recuperating
However he is appealing to well wishers who can come to the rescue of the family especially in getting the boy who is the only hope of the family to school.
The mother said she has tried to apply for bursary but currently none is forthcoming and called on people of good will to come to their rescue.
Sports For Change got informed of the boy from one of our volunteers. We contacted Joseph who was helping the family and arranged to visit them. The family's situation was really bad but we could only manage to help Roy. We promised and committed to sponsor his education. Roy was over the moon when we welcomed him in our SFC family. He joined other students during school holiday camp. He is very ambitious, quiet and shy. His dream is to be a civil engineer. He met one of our beneficiaries Julius, who did a civil engeneerng course and graduated last year. Julius come from avery humble back ground. His story and achievement really inspired Roy and the other students. We are happy to be able to give Roy a chance to education. A right every child should have. We need to raise more money to continue helping Roy and other kids like him. Thank you for your continued support.
