Nepal HART Earthquake Update

Aftermath of Nepal's Earthquake

Dear Supporter,

As you are aware, Nepal was hit by a 7.8 Earthquake on the 25th April 2015. We are relived to report that all our staff and volunteers have been accounted for and were not injured. We have set up a GlobalGiving fundraising page if you would like to donate to our teams relief efforts.

HART is currently assessing damage on the ground. They are assembling their resources to go out towards the epicentre in the Gorkha district where they have received reports of considerable damage, casualties and animal suffering. Some animal deaths have been reported from nearby villages, but so far no animals have been hurt in the villages that HART has already visited.

Field Updates

In March and April, our field partners HART were busy conducting a massive anti-rabies vaccination in Pokhara. This is an annual anti-rabies vaccination program in both the cities Pokhara and Bharatpur where HART aims to vaccinate over 70% of free roaming dogs. In the village of Chapakot, HART managed to vaccinate 83 dogs and 04 cats were vaccinated against rabies

Our volunteers also visited HART HQ to help with some much-needed bandage folding and give the building a fresh coat of paint. HART also recently awarded a bursary to Khim Bahadur Ale for his second year in veterinary school at AFU University.

How Your Donations Have Been Spent So Far

Plastic Surgical Table At The Centre

Dear Supporter,

Since kicking off our fundraiser for project partners HART (Himalayan Animal Rescue Trust), a local organisation that aims to improve the lives of animals in Nepal, we are already beginning to see great improvements in the care available to the local animals.

Through your donations HART has been able to purchase a new stainless steel surgical table. Presently, HART has been using plastic tables for operating on mainly cats and dogs. It might seem ridiculous, but in Nepal and for the HART team, this has been the most effective table to carry out much needed surgeries. The plastic tables are light, easy to transport to mobile camps and are easy to clean and store. However, HART have now moved into new premises and a new permanent table is required to help aid their work. The new stainless steel surgical table will be a great addition to improving the work conditions for not only the vets and the technicians, but for all the animals passing through.

Mr Khageshwaar Sharma the director of HART expressed he was overwhelmed by the impact the contribution will have on the centre when GVI staff members handed the donation over to him. The founders of HART, Barbara and Jim (UK) sent through a thank you email the same evening.

‘We'd like to thank you and GVI very, very much indeed for the fund raising for HART. We really appreciate this when you have so many other good causes demanding your attention.’

HART's work in Nepal plays a vital role to keeping the local dog population at bay as well as eradicating rabies. As their work calls for them to be in the more remote areas of Nepal, we hope that we can continue to support the centre and their dedicated team.
