IsraAID Guatemala works to empower underserved indigenous communities in Alta Verapaz by fostering resilience through education and mental health support. Together with Guatemala’s Ministry of Education, we partner with schools to provide a broad range of support to children and their families. This includes strengthening schools’ capacities to address critical issues such as child neglect, mental health, access to safe water, and nutrition.
We recently concluded the Learning Communities program, which trained nearly 600 teachers across San Cristóbal Verapaz and Campur, San Pedro Carchá. The sessions focused on inclusive education and new pedagogical methodologies, inspiring educators to nurture classroom resilience and drive student development.
We also conducted a series of specialized training courses designed to equip educators with practical tools and strategies. These workshops included self-care, teamwork, and conflict resolution for educational leaders, alongside training in psychological first aid, psychosocial support, and mental health for teachers and students. These initiatives aim to create safe, supportive educational environments that promote emotional well-being and resilience.
In Cobán, we introduced the Early Warning System to educators from four schools, a tool designed to identify and support at-risk students. This initiative seeks to reduce school dropouts, as children who stay in school can not only keep learning but also access additional forms of support. The initiative also encourages safer, more inclusive learning environments.
Finally, at the Sonríe Festival in San Juan Chamelco, teachers, parents, and community leaders gathered to create safe spaces for children. Through arts, crafts, games, and more, participants celebrated child advocacy, mental health awareness, and community resilience.
These initiatives will carry into 2025, where IsraAID Guatemala plans to continue its commitment to building safer, more unified communities. Happy New Year, and thank you for being part of this impactful journey!
