Summary

Indigenous women from Oaxaca are seeking to guarantee their right to proper health care during this pandemic. You can make it possible for 90 women to become health promoters through a training program that allows them to develop their own herbal medicines and medicinal gardens to build a community health center. This will utilize ancestral knowledge and techniques practiced by grandmothers and natural healers to attend to physical, mental, and emotional family health

Challenge

This pandemic, along with the precarious health system, has deeply affected the health of indigenous communities. With no supplies and no specialized personnel, the need to care for the sick at home has risen. Using medicinal plants, herbalism, and meals, women have built their own sort of ancestral knowledge pharmacy, as they have become the primary caretakers for their families. Death rates due to COVID-19 have risen in Zapotec communities, which affects the mental, emotional, and physical.

Solution

Healing among Women" program creates learning circles for young Zapotec girls and women in Istmo de Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, to respond to the limited public health system in the region and prepare community health promoters. We rescue ancestral and popular knowledge to protect our health access rights through prevention and self-wellness. We promote local herbal medicine, medicinal bed gardens, recipe-herbariums, and nutritional awareness to heal our bodies and mental health

Long-Term Impact

Thanks to your donation, we can continue preparing community promoters who recover and conserve local medicinal plants. We generate community healing spaces through gardens considered green pharmacies. Our goal is to prepare a total of 90 health promoters in the region to create their own herbal medicines, establish community apothecaries, materialize local medicinal plant prescriptions, revitalize ancestral knowledge, and exchange learning with other promoters from other regions and states
