A Vibrant Young Spirit

By Carolina Ospina | Project Leader

"My healing is progressing very quickly, and that makes me believe even more in hope." - María Ángel

Every story holds the potential to inspire and uplift the hearts of those who hear it. Today, we want to share with you the story of Maria Angel, a 12-year-old girl whose spirit shines with hope and resilience.

Maria Angel is a vibrant young girl, full of energy and passion for life. Her love for sports, especially soccer, has led her to live each moment on the field intensely, where she shines as a right-back defender.  She lives in San Javier, also known as Comuna 13 in Medellin, with her mother and grandmother, a family of strong women.

María Ángel's life took an unexpected turn 15 days ago when an accident in the kitchen led her to need the attention of our Pediatric Burn Unit at the Children's Hospital. This is how María Ángel recounts the event: "I was getting ready for school, applying mascara, and my grandmother went to do other chores in the house. I went down to the kitchen and wanted to flip the plantains she was cooking because they were burning, but unfortunately, when I did, the hot oil spilled on my right foot."

Thanks to the presence of the only specialized pediatric burn unit in the region, María Ángel receives comprehensive care focused on her rehabilitation. This includes not only medical treatment for her burn but also the necessary psychosocial support for her recovery. Accompanied by a highly trained medical team, María Ángel has embarked on a successful path to recovery.

What Maria Angel longs for most during her time in the hospital are the small things we sometimes "get used to," like returning to her school, her room, and enjoying her grandmother's meals. She dreams of a future where she can become a police officer, protecting her community, especially the women.

Today, we joyfully share that Maria Angel is on the path to a full recovery. In just 8 days, she will be able to embrace her daily life again, thanks to the hospital's care and her own inner strength, which have allowed her to overcome the various medical procedures she has needed. This achievement is not only hers but a testimony to the transformative power of generosity and support from people like you.

Your contribution to the Children's Hospital is not just a donation but an act of solidarity and hope. With your help, Maria Angel and thousands of children can access specialized burn care. From supporting medical treatments and enabling beds to celebrating special moments, your generosity makes a difference in the lives of those who need it most.

Today, Maria Angel reminds us that hope is a powerful force, capable of overcoming even the most difficult challenges. Her story is a reminder that, in the midst of adversity, we can always find light.
