After many years of working in short term missions it became clear that more was needed to help people. Being in a third world country for 2 weeks doing clinics in the villages did not have much effect on any long term illnesses. It is not possible to carry a years worth of medicine to a person with Diabetes, Hypertension, Osteoporosis, Asthma, Kidney disease, Epilepsy, Hyperlipidemia and a whole host of other illnesses. Nor is it possible to monitor them properly and make changes to treatment when needed.
Because of this, the Clinica de Esperanza was born. A year long clinic open to take care of all the people that have health problems all year long. These health problems keep people from working and functioning well enough to take care of their families.
The clinic has been open 9 years as of August 15, 2007. During this time, every pill, every treatment, a Honduran physcian, nurse, guard and cleaning lady, and utilities have been paid by donors like yourselves. No one at IRC is paid for running the clinic or keeping it in business. 100% of donations are used for the operation of the clinic itself. It also helps the economy to employ Hondurans who are badly in need of work.
This lady in the picture obviously has osteoporosis and was also found to have heart disease. Because of the full time nature of the clinic she is able to receive the care she needs on a regular basis. Even though she is elderly, she is still able to contribute to her family and assist in the care of the children while the parents work to feed them.
In Gratitude,
