Rahul Finds His Numbers

By John Sparks | President

White chalk powders his fingers as Rahul writes a series of numbers and figures. His soft giggle bounces off the chalkboard when he finally solves a challenging math problem. At only ten, his teachers see a spark of joy where there used to be bitterness, anger, and hopelessness.

Turn back the pages, and Rahul's laughter was a rare sound—his early childhood lived in the margins of Mumbai's red-light district. His mother, trapped in the sex trade, feared for her son's future. He was sullen and withdrawn, prone to fighting neighborhood boys, and skipping school while she worked. She saw him becoming a casualty to the dangerous neighborhood where destructive behavior is nurtured.

Through your gifts, Rahul was provided with safety, education, and the care that every child deserves. At first, he was combative and rife with anger but slowly as his teachers, counselors, and caretakers took the time to talk to him - he softened. As he dropped his defenses, his hunger for knowledge and learning grew. He is a bright and promising student who excels at math!

He says he wants to be an engineer, using his talent for math to make a better future for himself. This is all because you invested to give days of safety, rescue, and care to women and children trapped in the red-light districts of India. Thank you for believing that every child deserves a second chance!
