MenTe en Accion 5th edition / MenTe en Accion 5ta edicion

The fifth edition of our program MenTe en Acción kicked off on Saturday May 3rd, at Parque La Libertad in San José. Fiftynew girls from all over the country came together for what would be the first of twelve sessions where they will learn the basics of coding and programming, but also about leadership, teamwork and empowerment.

MenTe is an initiative that promotes the inclusion of more women in STEM; it strives to correct the gender unbalance, promote leadership and empower women in the field. The initiative consists of a 12-session program that targets women from 15 to 19 years old in which, guided by an amazing and very committed group of technical mentors (mainly women), and with the support of other volunteers who come teach several workshops, the girls will develop an app to tackle a social of environmental problem in their community.

During the first sessions the girls were able to start to get to know each other, the TMs and the organizing team. They were also introduced to different technologies which they were able to test out and start experimenting, opening their minds to a world of opportunities. The sessions also included brainstorming for ideas to determine what they want to do with their apps, and an introduction to programing.

“This program is a dream come true, made possible by a group of people determined to break taboos and desiring to teach society that women are also capable of achieving great things and that if we stop the divisions, we can reach our goals together. MenTe does a very important job for society in motivating so many young women to follow their dreams and overcome every obstacle”.

We also had a session with the parents or caretakers for them to be able to get to know the team, see who their daughters will be working with every Saturday, and generally have a better understanding of what the program entails. This session is very important, because for the long-term success of the program it is vital to have the parents on board. MenTe is an introduction to the world of STEM and all its possibilities, but if the parents don’t offer their support and motivate the girls to keep going then it is quite difficult to have a real lasting impact.

We are very excited to be hosting yet another edition of MenTe en Acción, specially seeing the real impact that we are having on these young women, in no small part thanks to your ongoing support. This year we also hope to host a second edition outside of San José, and scale the program to another Central American country and would like to invite to keep walking with us on this journey to take our girls as far as they can go.
