Recently upgraded water refill centre.

This is the report for the months of September, October and November. The long term objective of enabling 2000 and more families in Kangemi to access clean water and there has been further progress made for the last three months. First, the expansion of the water refill centre has been completed this has allowed the increase in the number of refills. In addition to this, a bottle water rinser was added to improve the cleanness of water and bottles.

The number of uptake water refills has increased from an average of 60 households per month to 110 households. The new members also increased from 180 previously to 317 an increase of 137 new households. Some of the new customers have come from the neighbouring towns, this implies that the project is doing well and the potential is there. There have also been sessions every Saturday to train the communities on the importance of hygiene and sanitation.

EMERGENCE OF NEW CHALLENGES.

These challenges have slowed down the project, they include: increase in taxes by the government, which has led to the increase in prices for bottles and handmade bottle pumps, this has slowed down the project because now more funds are needed to reach the target of providing cleaning water to 2000 households. Another challenge is that road construction has made the water even dirtier. Our goal is to ensure that the community receives clean water safe for drinking and home usage which is one of the Sustainable Development goals we want to achieve.

Access to clean water & sanitation progress report

In Kangemi, water runs into the taps only three days a week coupled with frequent shortages. Households store water in plastic containers and/or any form available and convenient to the individual household. During water shortage, women are out looking for this commodity and it doesn’t matter the quality or the source of the water at this point. Against this backdrop, The Ngao Foundation has installed three big water storage tanks plus a complete water Ultrafiltration system to continuously provide safe clean water to the community.

Our target is to serve the community with 20 litres bottles and hand press water dispensing pumps to reach 2000 households. So far, we have managed to serve 120 an increase of 60 households from the previous report, this means it is just the beginning of the journey to reach our expected target. Most of the households we served have maintained the spirit of taking safe clean drinking water by refilling at our water refilling station at an affordable price of $ 0.5. Since we started distributing the water bottles and the water dispensing hand press pumps the rate of water refilling by the households has increased within the past 4 months.

In the past months, we have also started supplying clean water to two (2) schools and we are expecting this number to rise to 10 in the coming months. The Ngao Foundation in the last months has also improved sanitation facilities where children wash their hands before taking their meals as will be shown in the pictures below. We have also started supplying water to one of the local hospitals (Eagles Health Centre) the target is to ensure that at least (5) health centres are using clean water from The Ngao

On the 21^st of August, The Ngao Foundation is expecting to host a delegation from the Rotary club of Westlands members situated in Nairobi. This visit is aimed at improving our different means of fundraising, this will also help in broadening our local fundraising initiatives. As mentioned in the previous report the sustainability of this is very high because of the increase of water refill from the community members. Safe Clean Drinking Water to Households in Kangemi

Supporting Household with Clean Water

It has been our desire to work with you in supporting families/household access safe clean drinking water. Water is a fundamental human need. It is believed that everyone is able to access safe clean drinking water at any point in the community. That each person on Earth requires at least 20 to 50 litres of clean, safe water a day for drinking, cooking, and simply keeping themselves clean. Millions of people are not able to access clean water and even many just accessing this important commodity is a big struggle. True that polluted water isn’t just dirty—it’s deadly. Tens of millions of people particularly children are seriously sickened by a host of water-related ailments—many of which are easily preventable.

In our implementation period, The Ngao Foundation just learned that Education suffers when sick children miss school. Economic opportunities are routinely lost to the impacts of rampant illness and the time-consuming processes of acquiring water where it is not readily available. Children and women bear the brunt of these burdens.

Our target is to serve the community with 20 litres bottles and water dispensing hand press pumps with the aim of reaching 2000 households. So far, we have managed to serve 60 households, this means it is just the beginning of the journey to reach our expected target. Most of the households we served have maintained the spirit of taking safe clean drinking water by refilling at our water refilling station at affordable price of $ 0.5. This project has a big potential of remaining sustainable. The uptake of refilling water by the families that already received the water bottles and water hand press pumps is overwhelming every other week. It is a challenge for us now to get more water bottles and water hand press pump to families for them to get safe clean drinking water. We appeal for your help. $15 will get one family a water bottle and a water hand press pump.
