Meet our new International Scholar, Catherine!

By Carly Kruyer | Operations Assistant

We are extremely happy to announce the acceptance of Catherine Cushenan as our new International Scholar.

Catherine is currently working on a MSc in Marine Conservation at the University of Algarve, in Portugal. In her second year, students are openly encouraged to find subjects that they are passionate about, and pursue them and that's what led her in this direction. With a passion for Marine life she will be going to join a 6-month program based between two Marine Protected Areas in Coral Bay, Austraila and Cocos (Keeling) Island, a territory 2750km Northwest of Perth where she will be carrying our her research with Global FinPrint, under the supervision of Euan Harvey.

She will be studying the shark populations in each location using both baited remote underwater video surveys (BRUVs) and aerial surveys. This is part of a global project to assess surveyed habitats and their roles as refuges, hotspots and/or bright spots. Aerial surveys are a novel introduction to science and during her time, she will be performing a comparison between the two methods to confirm the feasibility of marine aerial research. This study will be the first to validate the role of drones in data collection.

"Sharks have always been my true inspiration. I have been very fortunate in that I have been
able to volunteer and work with several NGOs and marine tourism companies between my
undergraduate degree and my current study. Through this I have tagged bull sharks, photo-identified whale sharks, fed 4cm pyjama catsharks and learned more about the diversity of elasmobranchs than I could have ever dreamed. Now I
want to share my experiences, not just with my generation, but with many generations to
come." - Catherine

We are very excited to have Catherine on our International Scholarship Program and we wish her all the best in her upcoming studies and look forward to following her journey!

Thank you for all your continued support!
