Empowering Residents at Langoni Old People's Home

The Langoni Old People’s home has been doing great since their new renovations. On 24th November 2018, alongside MOSHI Municipal Council we welcomed the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Faustin Ndugulile to Langoni Wazee Camp. He gave our Wazee some great health advice, thanked the hardworking staff and greatly appreciated the partnership between African Impact Foundation, the government and the Wazee!

Looking forward, after completing the renovations, we knew there was so much more we could do. Not only do the Wazee deserve the new living conditions, but also the best health care to strengthen their everyday living. So what’s next?
Langoni is moving on to a new stage, improving the independence of the residents, alleviating isolation and addressing their emotional needs. We have sought consultation from a community development occupational therapist and the Moshi Epignosis Physiotherapy Clinic to do individual assessments of the residents. They have in return identified 4 core areas for improvements:

1. Identify individual recommendations to minimize isolation and facilitate mobility for residents
2. Identify and implement strategies for program development that facilitate team building between residents
3. Empower the staff to facilitate positive relationships between staff members and residents
4. Increase staff, council and government accountability for residents through training/recruiting skilled staff and providing professional partnerships.

Further, we have a 5 year implementation plan put into place which also includes training staff members. This project is vital because it directly benefits elders living in vulnerable situations, isolated from society and receiving care from untrained staff. It provides long-term intervention strategies and training to ensure residents are independent, integrated into society and that skilled workers are caring for them.

As we are approaching 2019, we will start fundraising for this new program as soon as possible and hopefully be able to start mid-2019. We are SO excited to be working with so many partners to really strengthen the health of the well-deserving Wazee.

Reflecting back on 2018, we have now reached an incredible stage where the living environment of the Wazee is safe and hygenic, and. our partnership is strong and impactful! All of this would not be possible without incredible donors like yourself.

Over the past quarter, there have been exciting events happening for the Wazee, the home and everyone involved! 

First, African Impact celebrated 5 years in Moshi and what better way to celebrate than at Wazee! There was attendace from Moshi Municipal Head of Community Development and Social Welfare as well as over 100 community members and students from across all projects! What a celebration we had!

Next on the the list is one of our most exciting updates for our amazing Wazee. On Friday, local physiotherapist Shadrack, came all the way from KCMC (Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre), a hospital in town, to thoroughly assess each and every wazee member. Joined by Sarah, Amos and physiotherapist student and volunteer Tom, they spent over half an hour with each wazee member testing their mobility, assessing the environment they’re sleeping in and getting their full medical histories. Together with Shadrack, Tom will create individual plans for each wazee and information sheets to help guide future volunteers through the plans. We’re really excited for the next couple of months at the Wazee.

Finally, 20 Wazee are still receving their seasonal fruit 4 times a week thanks to our generous reoccuring donors like yourself!
