The Wazee Langoni renovations are moving forwards swiftly, as we’ve completed phase one (of four) and coming close to completing phase 2. Phase one was completed earlier this year and included emergency renovations, purchasing basic construction materials (e.g. sand and breezeblocks) and engaging a contractor.
We have been hard at work since then, and completed various different fundraising activities to complete phase 2 (constructing new windows and doors, purchasing paint, rebuilding broken steps) – including a 7k Fun Run from our Volunteer House to Langoni Wazee (raising over $600!), Cultural Evening at the Volunteer House, imagine lots of Tanzanian dancing and drums (raising over $100), and many generous donations from past, present and future volunteers, friends, family and colleagues.
The renovations at the Wazee continue to be a concern and a priority. During the current cold season, it becomes even more evident for their need and we have fundraising events in place to continue to raise awareness and build funds for this project. Even the small emergency renovations have made a big impact, and we are looking forwards to hearing from the residents about the impact of the full renovations, hopefully later this year.
Our work at the Wazee goes beyond the renovations – we work on a daily basis providing social interaction, national news reports, exercise and games. The renovation of their living spaces will not only provide more security and protection from thieves, weather and mosquitoes - but it will dramatically increase their quality of life in their later years.
