Democracy under attack: Brazilians take the street

By Francesca Pellegatta | Junior Project Manager

Dear Donor,

The 8th of January several hundred of Brazilians demonstrators have take the streets of Brasilia. The extreme right-wing protesters and supporters of the former president Jair Bolsonaro – defeated at the last elections of October 2022 by Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva – have reached the palaces of power of the capital. Similarly to the assault to Capitol Hill in Washington happened on the 6th of January 2021, a crowd has broken down the security barriers of the presidential palace of Planalto and the palace Supreme Court and the Congress, vandalizing the offices.

The hope of the demonstrators was that the leaders of the armed forces decided to intervene to overturn what they believe to be a fraudulent election. The balance is of 46 wounded people, 6 of them seriously injured and hundreds of people have been arrested. Condemnations of the incident and statements of solidarity to the Brazilian institutions quickly arrived from the governments of several countries.

The day after, on the 9th of January, thousand of citizens have taken the streets in different cities of Brazil in order to demonstrate in favor of democracy. The biggest gatherings have taken place in San Paolo and in Pio de Janeiro, where the crowd has asked Bolsonaro to be arrested and taken to trial.

In this general situation that affects the security of the whole country, the activities of Aleimar’s local representative – the Archdiocese Psychological Support Service for Families (SAPFAM) of Manaus – are going on in favor of 60 vulnerable children. Unfortunately, our local partner Father Hudson reports that young girls are the main recipients of the project because they are more at risk of violence and abuse. Thanks to the project, they receive both physical as well as psychological support. Despite this difficult moment that the country is facing, your help is really fundamental because allow us to be close to a lot of children in need, giving them the hope for a better future.

Thank you!
