SHINE Humanity has been operating it’s Primary Healthcare clinic in Gharo ,a small town in Sindh Pakistan, for the last 4 years. Our patients come either from the town itself or from surrounding villages. A large percentage of the population is migrant,almost all belong to the lowest economic strata. Getting access to quality healthcare that is within reach is indeed a challenge for most of these people.
Often ailments that are chronic or are difficult to treat are left untreated as the patient’s family does not have the resources to spend money on long term diagnosis or treatment.
One such story is that of 18 year old Ismail*. He was brought to our Gharo clinic by his mother. He showed symptoms of lethargy and irritability. His mother told our doctor that Ismail* had difficulty concentrating and displayed mood swings.
After doing a psychiatric evaluation of the patient our doctor prescribed medicines and advised follow up. Since his initial visit, Ismail has been showing a marked improvement in behavior. His general appearance has improved and so has his attitude.
SHINE Humanity typically provides 3 days of medicines free of cost, in Ismaill's case, the clinic is providing him medicines on a long term basis.
Ismail* has two other siblings with similar complaints.
Psychiatric issues are difficult enough to treat if one is a person of means, if not, the patient often become a pariah and a burden on the family.
