Partnerships, New Processes & an Exciting 2017/18

Dear Supporters,

We are now firmly in 2017 and have hit the ground running with our scholarship programme.

Last year our partnership with the Foundation for Young Australians came to an end. Experience Asia, the programme that we were in partnership with, came to an end due to changing priorities on the part of the Foundation for Young Australians. As a result, we don’t have any students currently signed up to join our National Scholarship Programme for Australians in 2017.

Looking for new partners

We are in the beginning processes of looking for and forging new partnerships with Australian schools, universities, institutions and clubs and we hope that in the next few months we will have secured several new partnerships. Our Australian partners will help us identify students who we can invite to apply for a scholarship.

New Processes

As the scholarship programme grows, we have recognised the need to work on our administrative processes and procedures. Thus, we have been working on streamlining our application process. This means that it has become easier for us to manage the recruitment process, from start to finish. The application process is in two parts and it is designed to allow us to get to know applicants better before we reach out to them to award them a scholarship- we want to know what their career path plans are, how they view international development and how they foresee the opportunity benefitting them.

As we take on a more active role, as opposed to solely working via partner organisations, we have also re-looked at eligibility, programmes for scholars to choose and the value of each scholarship. Please invite any Australian organisations that you think would be great partners for us or any Australian scholars that you might know, to view our requirements, apply or get in touch for more information!

Looking back at our 2016 scholars

Dear Supporters,

As we reach the end of 2016 we would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the scholars that have benefited from this program this year.

Jorden

Jorden joined ua GVI run healthcare project in Phang Nga, Thailand where she got to work with children with special needs and disabilities.

This is what Jorden had to say about the skills that she gained while on her trip with GVI.I learnt about the importance of independence and responsibility as well as the benefits of working collaboratively and effectively in a group.' Jorden also said that her leadership skills were recognised and that her 'ability to co-operate with others and building trust with volunteers and children were strongly enhanced while on the project.'

'As a volunteer, this experience provided me with a number of opportunities for additional professional benefits by demonstrating that choosing to volunteer in a foreign country will potentially add a boost on my resume so employers can hopefully see that I can think outside the box and work past my comfort zone. The added benefits of teamwork, foreign language knowledge, and hard work also add polish to my skills and knowledge when applying for jobs in the future. As a student studying social work at university I feel this experience has given me the necessary skills to potentially work overseas after graduation.'

We can't wait to see what Jorden does next and we wish her all the best for the future!

Montanna

Montanna got to experience 3 Asian countries- Fiji, Nepal and Thailand. While trying to sum up her experiences she had this to say, 'I had hoped to gain a greater understanding of the culture and feel a sense of achievement when seeing progress from my efforts. My expectations have been met, plus more! I now have friends from all walks of life and skills that will definitely help me with employment in the future'.

Montanna is going to be studying Science at university next year and we wish her all the best!

Keely

Keely joined us in Phang Nga, Thailand and she wanted to 'feel like I've made a difference and be more appreciative of the country that I live in for example, access to work, health care and safety.' The highlight of her trip was seeing the appreciation on the faces of the children she was teaching, as well as that of their parents. She has learnt valuable tips on communication, presenting and multiculturalism.

Keely will be beginning her undergraduate degree in criminal justice in the new year. We can't wait to see what she goes on to achieve with that qualification!

Keely's Trip to Thailand

Dear Supporters,

Keely has just returned from a 5-month teaching trip to Phang Nga, Thailand. This trip was made possible by our partnership with the Foundation for Young Australians and, of course, your generous donations.

The teaching program that is run by GVI in Thailand trains volunteers to teach English in local schools. The aim of the program is to help develop English skills so that students gain skills that will impact their future. The overall aim is to help the community improve their quality of life through education.

Classrooms are often overcrowded and teachers need enthusiastic volunteers to ease their workload, give the children some extra attention and more exposure to spoken English. Volunteers are also required to practice English with the wider community, providing them with the language skills to be able to take advantage of the increase in tourism in the area.

This is what Keely had to say about her trip:

What did you hope to achieve from this experience?

To feel like I've made a difference and be more aware of other cultures. I already feel like I have made a difference being in the classroom. Also seeing the parents faces seeing us in the classroom teaching their children is amazing! I am much more appreciative of the country we live in for example-work stability, family, health, safety.

How do you think you have developed?

I have much more appreciation of other cultures. I am thankful for how lucky we are back at home in Australia. I realized that multicultural is important and should be more accepted back at home.

I have learned lots of tips to help communicate and teach people who don't have English as a first language. I’ve loved teaching and getting to know the students and meeting some great volunteers from all over the world.
