Brydie goes to Nepal

Dear Supporter,

This month I would like to share with you Brydie's story about her time with GVI in Nepal volunteering on the child care projects.

Describe your average day during your stay in Nepal.

Every day at 6am I get up and get ready for our Streets Boys program. We work with them every morning for 2 hours before school helping them out with their homework, playing English based games with them and then doing a sport or a physical based game with them. The boys are all so lovely and the happiness you feel when you help them with that math problem they were stuck on or helping them be the best person they can be is just amazing!

After the Streets program I then head to Male Patan to help out at the day care centre. There are around 30 crazy kids who are just adorable! Two Didi’s (teachers) work at the centre and we help them with the daily running of the centre, assisting in teeth cleaning, organising and running activities and helping to clean the centre. Even though the kids don't speak English, just seeing their smiling faces everyday when you turn up is great.

Everyone that you meet is always so happy to help and are there for a conversation. The atmosphere in Nepal is one of love and happiness.

What was your most interesting discovery?

Discovering myself and what I can handle has been a journey itself. Nepal is the first country that I've travelled to solo and just has really made me get to know myself.

What aspect of your job do you enjoy most?

I love just being able to help others! Playing with the kids is a bonus but just being with the kids helping them out is such a good feeling.

What were your proudest accomplishment when working for GVI?

One of the things I do at the Street Boys home is do one on one work with a boy called Ramesh. I’ve created an activities book for him to help him catch up at school. In the book we cover all types of things; fractions, spelling, odd things out, drawing, comprehension. All things that will help improve general school life as well as helping him get the best opportunities that he can. I’ve been working with him since September and have seen such an improvement already. One thing we're trying really hard at improving for Ramesh (and even some of the other boys) is to sound out words they don’t know rather than just reading the letters. They aren't taught phonetics at school so it's something we are slowly trying to implement to help them along.

Thank you to Brydie for being such a wonderful scholar to have in Nepal and for all of your hard work.

It is thanks to your donations that opportunities like this are possible! Thank you!

With Gratitude,

GVI Charitable Trust
