Skills are life line: Live and Earn

By Huma Aslam | Project Leader

I am Zuman of just 19 years with matriculation level education. I am an elder child in my family. Indeed, I was a normal girl I mean no tension to earn or feel even about the earning or expenses of the family because my father was alive and was running a small grocery shop at the corner of area residential area. Indeed, sudden death of my father brought lot of challenges for our family as he was the only source of income in the family. We are total 5 members now in the family including my mother, me and 1 brother of 4 years and 2 sisters 7 and 11 years.

I wanted to run that small grocery shop but could not do as I proved an unexperienced person and the shop went in loss and within three months, I wind up it. I tried to join any job but was too hard as I was just matriculate. But I was lucky that I got a teaching job in a small private school and they were ready to pay Rs.1700/only. In initial months, it was very good for me that I was spending Rs.700/ for my travel and petty expenses and Rs.1000/ was handing over to mother for the home expenses. On the completion of one-year job, the school management raised my salary Rs.300/ which means Rs.2000/- per month. But due to utilization of savings as made by father as well as increased expenses of the education of brother and sisters as well as the home expenses, it was too much stressful for me to manage all in just Rs.2000/- per month. I thought to earn more to fulfill the requirements of the family. In continuation of searching more earning options, I heard about dress making training by ARTS Foundation and fortunately the classes were in evening. So, I decided to join it along continue my morning job with the school. So, I submitted my application and joined 6 months evening class after my selection in ARTS Foundation’s Vocational Center.

The course includes more than just dress making as it was about color combinations, fashion designs, marketing and dealing with customers. The course has focus on building confidence among orphan girls to augment their interpersonal and negotiation skills to deal with clients/customers to attract them to get more orders. Adding more about my learning, I will say, ‘I learned everything, right from sketching, drafting, cutting, stitching and negotiating with customers.

ARTS Foundation with generous support of Philanthropists under GlobalGiving is providing whole set of basic materials which they need for the course, like fabric, threads, buttons etc as well as pick and drop facility because the orphan girls can’t bear travel and transport expenses. Indeed, ARTS Foundation is very thankful to the philanthropists for making this work possible through their generous online funding and support.
