Plant 50,000 Trees In Northern Rwanda

Dear Supporters and Partners,

We are pleased to share an important update on our 50,000 Trees Planting Project in Rulindo District, Rwanda. Thanks to your generosity, we have successfully established our tree nursery where thousands of saplings are being raised in preparation for planting.

Nursery Location

Our sapling nursery is located in Burega Sector, close to Buyoga Sector in Rulindo District.
The exact coordinates of this nursery site are:

This strategic location ensures easy access to the communities involved, a good water supply, and close proximity to our initial planting site.

The first photo shows this location marked with a dropped pin in Google Maps, providing transparency to our donors about where the work is happening.

First Planting Area – 5 Hectares

We would like to clarify that the 5 hectares mentioned in our previous updates refers to the first land area where planting will begin.
This is the starting point for our larger vision of planting 50,000 trees across multiple phases.

Work on preparing this first 5-hectare plot is underway, and the saplings currently growing in the nursery will be transplanted here during the upcoming planting season.

Nursery Progress Overview

• More than 50,000 saplings are currently being raised at the site.

• Seedlings receive daily watering and maintenance by volunteers and youth.

Dear Patrons,

On behalf of Rwanda Youth Development and Voluntary Organisation (RWAYDAVO), I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the support you have provided so far to our tree-planting project hosted on GlobalGiving.

We are pleased to share that we are making steady progress in our fundraising efforts. Our immediate goal is to raise USD $5,900 for preparing 5 hectares of land for tree planting by the end of December 2025, and your continued support brings us closer to achieving this milestone.

I would also like to take a moment to provide an update on the community we serve. Our work takes place in the Burega sector of Rwanda, home to more than 12,000 people. According to the Fourth Rwanda Population and Housing Census (2012), Burega had 12,730 residents, and the neighboring Buyoga sector had 22,171 residents. More than 90% of the population in this region relies on agriculture as their main livelihood.

Children form a significant part of this community and represent its future. As per the 2012 census, 4,977 children were under the age of 15. The adult population aged 15–64 numbered 7,215, and the elderly population aged 65 and above numbered 538.

Our tree-planting project aims to address multiple community needs: reducing poverty, improving nutrition, combating hunger, supporting climate-change mitigation, strengthening natural resource management, and fostering social cohesion and community-led development.

To achieve these goals, we work closely with community volunteers during both the planting and maintenance phases. Students from local schools also participate so they can learn firsthand the importance of environmental conservation. We hope they will grow alongside the trees and take pride in caring for them.

There are three schools within our project area:

• Burega Primary & Secondary School – approximately 1,200 students

• Butangamundu Primary & Secondary School – more than 1,000 students

• Muyanza Primary & Secondary School – around 1,500 students

In the Rulindo district as a whole, 57.1% of the population is categorized as non-poor, 23.2% as poor, and 19.7% as extremely poor. According to the EICV3 (Integrated Household Living Conditions Survey), Rulindo has the highest percentage of extremely poor individuals in the Northern Province.

Through this project, we aspire to make a meaningful and lasting impact in the community by improving livelihoods and cultivating a culture of environmental stewardship.
