Project of the Month Update: December 2012

By Mari Kuraishi | President, Founder of GlobalGiving

Dear Project of the Month Club,

We’re pleased to share with you that last month, you and 131 other Project of the Month Club members raised $3,953 for "Change The Lives Of Troubled Youth & Shelter Dogs" a project helping incarcerated youth learn patience, compassion and responsibility by caring for, training and finding adoptive homes for shelter dogs that might otherwise be euthanized.

Sharlene Erickson, one of this project's leaders, wanted to let you know that your donations are going to purchase building materials so that the youths can build more kennels and save more dogs. They're excited to "change youths one dog at a time!"

For December's Project of the Month, we're excited to share with you a project called "Empowering Women Through Design in Rural Peruled by an organization calle Awamaki. Economic opportunities for women in Ollantaytambo, Peru are limited, do not pay well, and are based exclusively on a tenuous tourism market. Single mothers work tirelessly to support and care for their children. They have limited professional mobility and often suffer from depression without an outlet for creative self-expression while struggling to make an income during rainy season when they cannot sell their textiles to tourists. Awamaki Lab is a fashion design residency that both supports Quechua weavers by creating new sales channels for their textiles, and helps to finance a sewing and design collective in Ollantaytambo to create a sustainable enterprise for local women.

Annie Millican, Project Leader, wanted to share with you her message of gratitude upon learning that she was selected to participate in the Project of the Month Club:

"We are deeply grateful to Global Giving for this recognition.  Being selected as project of the month is a wonderful opportunity for us to share our interdisciplinary approach to community development with the Global Giving network.  It helps validate the three rewarding and challenging years we’ve spent building an educational residency that fosters meaningful employment for rural female artisans.  Our entire team is simply thrilled!"

Thank you so much for your support and kindness this holiday season, and we hope that you are proud to know that you are offering an opportunity for women in Peru to express their creativity while creating an environment for their economic stabiity and growht. Your support is having an earth-changing impact around the world.

Warm regards,
Mari and the GlobalGiving Team
