Bed Nets Have Made an Impact in 2017 - Protected Lives From Malaria

Dear Project Supporters,

Thanks to your generous donations, over 200 bed nets were distributed to families in Freetown, Kamawornie, Bo, Liberia, and Cameroon in 2017. These bed nets are providing families with protection from malaria while they sleep. Our goal is to provide even more bed nets to families in 2018. We want to change the statistics below.

According to the CDC:

Africa is the most affected due to a combination of factors:

A very efficient mosquito (Anopheles gambiae complex) is responsible for high transmission.
The predominant parasite species is Plasmodium falciparum, which is the species that is most likely to cause severe malaria and death.
Local weather conditions often allow the transmission to occur year-round.
Scarce resources and socio-economic instability have hindered efficient malaria control activities.

Malaria is one of the most severe public health problems worldwide. It is a leading cause of death and disease in many developing countries, where young children and pregnant women are the groups most affected. According to the World Health Organization’s World Malaria Report 2013 and the Global Malaria Action Plan

3.2 billion people (half the world’s population) live in areas at risk of malaria transmission in 106 countries and territories
In 2016, malaria caused an estimated 216 million clinical episodes and 445,000 deaths. An estimated 91% of deaths in 2016 were in the WHO African Region.

The most vulnerable are persons with no or little immunity against the disease. In areas with high transmission (such as Africa south of the Sahara), the most vulnerable groups are:

Young children, who have not yet developed partial immunity to malaria
Pregnant women, whose immunity is decreased by pregnancy, especially during the first and second pregnancies
Travelers or migrants coming from areas with little or no malaria transmission, who lack immunity.

Your Donation is Helping to Reduce Malaria Incidence

Dear Project Supporters,

Thank you for your continued support that is providing more families with bed nets and saving more lives from malaria.

Since the last report, we have raised $50. These funds were used to distribute 5 nets. Aruna and Mariama (pictured) are two kids who received a net. They send their appreciation to YOU for providing these nets.

We are actively working in concert with the WHO Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016-2030 – adopted by the World Health Assembly in May 2015. The Strategy sets ambitious but achievable global targets, including:

Reducing malaria case incidence by at least 90% by 2030.
Reducing malaria mortality rates by at least 90% by 2030.
Eliminating malaria in at least 35 countries by 2030.
Preventing a resurgence of malaria in all countries that are malaria-free.

This Strategy was the result of an extensive consultative process that spanned 2 years and involved the participation of more than 400 technical experts from 70 Member States. It is based on 3 key pillars:

Ensuring universal access to malaria prevention, diagnosis, and treatment;
Accelerating efforts towards elimination and attainment of malaria-free status;
Transforming malaria surveillance into a core intervention."

The bed nets that you are helping to provide to families is one of the three key pillars to the goal of reducing malaria by 90%. Your donation is helping to take us one life at a time closer to this goal. These malaria nets are a proven way to prevent malaria. Thanks to your generosity, we are continuing to provide bed nets to families in need.

We are additionally providing diagnosis and treatment of malaria. We are convinced that together we will one day see a world with no malaria. We are excitedly looking forward to this and taking steps to get there.

You Helped Provide 124 Mosquito Bed Nets to Families!

Dear Project Supporters,

According to the World Health Organization, in 2015, there were roughly 212 million malaria cases and an estimated 429 000 malaria deaths. Increased prevention and control measures have led to a 29% reduction in malaria mortality rates globally since 2010. Sub-Saharan Africa continues to carry a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden.

While those statistics are very sad, the reality is we can and we are doing something to change that. We are together making progress and reducing malaria- related deaths.

The World Health Organization confirms that long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the preferred form of insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) for public health programmes. In most settings, WHO recommends LLIN coverage for all people at risk of malaria. The most cost-effective way to achieve this is by providing LLINs free of charge, to ensure equal access for all. In parallel, effective behaviour change communication strategies are required to ensure that all people at risk of malaria sleep under a LLIN every night, and that the net is properly maintained.

Your donations are making this possible - the targeted free distribution to at-risk beneficiaries.

Bed Nets are a proven way to significantly reduce malaria and thanks to your generosity, we are continuing to provide bed nets to families in need. We are not going to stop until every person in Sierra Leone has a bed net protecting them.

In the last 3 months, we distributed 124 bed nets to families in Sierra Leone. You can see some of the smiling faces of families and children receiving bed nets. They are smiling in appreciation of a healthy, malaria-free future - thanks to YOUR support!
