Riding the Storm-PTSD and COVID-19

Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) began as a viral pneumonia in China in late 2019. By March 2020, it reached pandemic proportions being transmitted rapidly throughout most of the world. The ease of transmission, lack of population immunity, delayed responses in testing, lack of equipment, and the challenges in implementing community-based measures to limit contact, deeply affected everyone, especially veterans dealing with trauma from the battlefield.

With its unpredictability, and need for distance and isolation, COVID-19 triggers PTSD symptoms including; a hyper-vigilant stance, avoidance, negative mood and cognitions, there is clear fear that the world as we know it is about to change, and that the near future may be quite dark. Finally, at least for those infected or placed in home quarantine, intrusive thoughts related to health, and even death, are a probable consequence.

So how are the Service Dog teams of Canines With a Cause training and coping? Texts, phone calls, and emails to our veterans became a daily routine, making sure everyone had needed support. Some veterans received food and other needed supplies, especially older vets who could not safely visit a store. With veteran suicide rates still off the charts we were not taking any chances.

Zoom classes were held on the same day and time as regular classes. We challenged our teams to train their dogs fun tricks and provided plenty of training videos on YouTube. Our teams worked with their dogs, posted great photos on our Facebook page, and supported one another.

As restrictions relax and weather improves, we are starting outdoor classes again, practicing social distancing and common sense. Our teams and staff and rode the storm, with a little help from man's best friend.

We hope you are staying safe and healthy. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Cathy and the Canines Crew
