Canines With a Cause (CWAC) rescues dogs from local shelters, the dogs are placed in state prisons where they live and train with offenders. The offender trainers assess the dogs for health and behavior issues, appropriate dogs are placed free of charge with veterans suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and/or Traumatic Brain Injury after training is complete and dogs achieve certification. Based upon their assessment, dogs are also placed with children suffering with PTSD, in a VA sponsored substance abuse recovery home or placed for adoption with loving families.
Canines With a Cause started as a small program of Friends of Animals Utah in September of 2010. It has since expanded to 89 veteran/dog teams currently training in 3 states and 42 incarcerated trainers assessing and training dogs for the program.
Current CWAC Programs:
Pawsitive Healing for Veterans – We provide, at no cost to the veterans, placement of dogs assessed for appropriate behavior, regularly scheduled classes lead by certified professional dog trainers enabling the veteran to develop skills needed to continue training their own assistance dogs.
Healing Hounds – CWAC dogs live in a VA funded substance recovery facility, interacting and assisting veterans recovering from drug and/or substance abuse.
Pals With Paws - Partnership with Children’s Justice Center and state foster care, training and providing comfort dogs to children dealing with PTSD.
Loving Home Adoption - While we try to make our initial assessment at the shelter, with the goal of veteran placement with in mind, not all dogs meet the criteria during training. Should this happen, and no other program is suitable for them, we find, place and monitor a loving home adoption.
Serving the under-served veteran population is a CWAC priority. We recognize that it may be difficult for veterans in rural locations to access weekly classes, but this should not eliminate them from participation in our programs. Utilizing Facetime provides a virtual extension of our Pawsitive Healing program which allows for video training and weekly "in person" sessions for veterans unable to attend regular classes.
Our commitment to our veterans, dogs and all who benefits from our life-saving programs is made possible because of generous donors like you. We appreciate your commitment and support.
Sincerely,
Cathy
