Originally called Armistice Day, commemorating the signing of the agreement that ended World War I at 11:00 A.M., November 11, 1918, this federal holiday was changed to Veterans Day in 1954. At that time, it became a day to honor all the men and women who have served in the armed forces of the United States.
Veterans Day is Sunday, November 11th. This is an important day for showing appreciation to members of our military, past and present.
If you're looking for an appropriate way to honor an active military friend or veteran or would like to contribute in a way that's meaningful for heroes everywhere, here's a list of suggestions to start you off:
1) Attend a Veterans Day event in your area.
2) Show your patriotism, fly the flag.
3) Visit your local VA Hospital, assisted living or nursing home for veterans. Most of the veterans living at these facilities are lonely and love the company.
4) Talk to a veteran, ask them about their experiences. Some questions to get started are: What did you do in the military? How long did you serve? What was your favorite moment in all your time in the service? Did anyone else in your family serve? Why did you choose to go into the service branch you did?
5) If you see a veteran or active military in an airport, store, on the street, thank them for their service.
6) Donate to a nonprofit that provides important services to our active military and veterans. The programs of Canines With a Cause depend upon your support to help place and train shelter dogs with veterans suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and/or Traumatic Brain Injury.
The mission of Canines With a Cause (CWAC) is to create sustainable programs and processes to effectively and holistically pair veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) with well-trained assistance dogs. By adhering closely to our mission, CWAC strives to move veterans from a state of PTSD toward a state of Post-Traumatic-Growth (PTG). In committing to positive “growth,” we become one of many steps on the soldiers’ path toward healing. More importantly, we’re able to develop creative-individualized training solutions that meet the mental, emotional and economic-stability challenges veterans face today.
Thanks again, without the support of caring people like you, our lifesaving programs would not be possible.
Sincerely,
Cathy
