Robotics for young women with disabilities

At the Omar Dengo Foundation we are thrilled to announce that a new cohort of young women with mild disabilities are being trained thanks to your kind support. Between September 10^th and November 19^th, 2022, 10 young women with mild cognitive disabilities are participating on a new training workshop on robotics. These young women are representing three Costa Rican public schools: Alajuelita High School, San Miguel High School and Aserrí High School.

The objective of the course is to promote educational experiences to strengthen their logical reasoning skills, creativity and collaborative work, through the construction and coding of robots. The course is based on a learning-by-doing approach, so that these young women build their own knowledge. As such, the training facilitator (a young woman as well) is a guide between the participants and their learning process. We want to share with you a couple of testimonials from two of current beneficiaries:

Argerie Paniagua, a Senior from San Miguel High School, says: This robotics course has taught me many new programs but It also helped me on a social and personal level. The course has been a challenge, because I have had to learn to be patient. I think learning robotics helps me get a better future, to learn new things and help other people too.

Karla Castro, another Senior student from San Miguel High School, shares: What this workshop on robotics taught me is to explore technology a little more and it has strengthened my knowledge in coding, and in things like being patience, and how to be patient with other people. Yes, it has been a challenge, because sometimes you don't even know what to do and you have to innovate and explore your head. Also robotics allows me to help other people, something that makes their lives easier.

We are so excited to hear from these young women and the usefulness of this workshop. We will surely share with you more information about the course once it is completed. We are happy to announce that your support to our “Robotics for Young Women with Disabilities” project will allow us to plan and execute again face-to-face training workshops. Updated, more flexible health measures in Costa Rica now permit bringing a group of young women with mild cognitive disabilities to the Fundación Omar Dengo´s laboratories to learn about robotics.

We are expecting to set up a group of at least 12 young women for a face-to-face training workshop, that will take place between mid-August and early September, 2022. This number of beneficiaries responds to maximum occupancy according to health regulations at FOD´s laboratories. We will make sure that all of the young women participating in the training workshop will have a blast, but at the same time, making sure that they are on a safe environment too.

We want to thank you once again for supporting our cause of bringing educational opportunities to underserved populations in Costa Rica. We are sure that these educational experiences will empower these young women to achieve their goals in the future.
