Rwanda - Save 1 million lives

Rwanda is one of the countries where transplantation is not yet available as a treatment option. Patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease rely exclusively on dialysis, which is costly, difficult to access and cannot provide the improved survival and quality of life that transplantation offers. GlobalGiving highlights that 10 to 16 percent of the adult population in Rwanda may be affected by chronic kidney disease.

The “Rwanda – Save 1 Million Lives” initiative focuses on building the country’s capacity through the training of one Rwandan healthcare professional. The programme includes DTI’s TPM training and a two-week internship in a Spanish transplant centre. This experience exposes participants to hospital donation organisation, donor evaluation, brain-death protocols, and the ethical foundations of transplantation.

Upon returning to Rwanda, the trained professional can contribute to:
• establishing the foundations for future national donation activity
• preparing hospitals to identify potential donors
• training other healthcare teams
• promoting awareness at institutional and community level

Advancing Organ and Tissue Donation in Rwanda to Save Lives

Over the past months, DTI Foundation has continued to work in the Rwanda region to promote organ and tissue donation and transplantation as a way to save and improve lives.

Through our collaboration with local healthcare professionals, institutions, and community stakeholders, we have shared knowledge, built awareness, and fostered systems that enable more people in need to receive a life-saving transplant.

This work is directly aligned with DTI Foundation’s mission: to save as many lives as possible worldwide by advancing organ and tissue donation and transplantation practices.
