SAVE A CHILD WITH CANCER

Nicolas is a small 3-year-old boy, who lives in Tunja, a municipality located northeast of the Colombian capital, with his family. Among his qualities is that he loves to dream and has a lot of fun playing, he is not shy and he loves to socialize with people, while he worries about discovering everything around him. He is very funny, intelligent, active and kind child.

This little boy has a disease called Retinoblastoma, which began when at three months of age, his father noticed a light in the child's left eye and decided to take him to pediatrics, he was remitted to the optometrist and then to the ophthalmologist in the city of Bogota, which determined an alert in the eyes of Nicolas.

His family decided to request a particular appointment to review it and there the doctor who saw it clarified the condition, had an advance of 80% of eye cancer in both eyes. His parents decided to operate it the following week and it was nucleated. From this surgery, he was scheduled for 5 chemotherapies, cryotherapy and thermotherapy, and seeing no positive results in his recovery, he got contacts that brought her to our Children's Hospital San Vicente Fundacion, to access the Retinoblastoma program. From the treatments that were performed to Nicolas his visual condition improved, he had rapid evolution and the response to the treatment was the best.

Nicolas has a 12-year-old brother whom he misses every day since he cannot accompany him to his treatments, but he is very happy for the results he has had. His mother says: "I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't arrived here." And she affirms with her husband, that they have had very good attention in the Hospital, that they feel proud and trust the good service that this provides.

Nicolas and his family are very Catholic and full of hope in God, they are always full of faith and desire to move forward, which has helped them throughout the process. They fully trust the Hospital and recommend it, as well as their doctors because they consider them very willing and very human.

Maria José is a cheerful, vain, playful and very intelligent 7-year-old girl. She is recognized as one of the best students in her course and although she is very responsible for her homework, she also admits that she loves playing with her friends in her spare time, being with her family and going for a walk with them.

This beautiful story of Maria José was not the same 5 years ago when she was discovered a disease called retinoblastoma or eye cancer, this is a rare type of cancer, which affects the tissues of the retina of the eye and is mostly discovered to an early age. It all started when his grandmother noticed a peculiar glow in his right eye that was not normal, immediately his parents decided to go to the doctor who sent them to our Children's Hospital San Vicente Foundation in Medellin.

In February 2013 she began the entire process of treating her pathology, the day she arrived she was directly cited to the operating room because a tumor that had very advanced in her right eye and that if not treated in time could possibly be treated could be treated urgently cause the loss of that eye. Since then he began receiving intra-arterial chemotherapy treatment and they assured her that since her second procedure that the cancer was no longer malignant.

His mother Marcela says that everything was thanks to God, their belief is so great that since they heard that news, the most important thing for them and their family was to pray because they knew they would overcome this situation. She says: "Thank God that I heal my daughter and then the Hospital team because it was the best thing that crossed my daughter's life, all the assistance support as well as its facilities I keep in my heart". Although at first it was very difficult for the family and they did not understand what was happening in their lives, over time and by the specialists of our Children's Hospital, they understood that if there was a cure and that they were lucky enough to diagnose everything weather.

Now she has been with the inactive tumor for 5 years and looks perfectly through her two eyes, which allows her to appreciate all the colors when she paints her books and when she uses her makeup that she loves so much.
