When Thiago was 5 months old, he was diagnosed with ocular cancer. One day his mother took a picture of him and noticed a white reflection in the pupil of his left eye, immediately he consulted the doctor. According to the diagnosis, he had a high possibility of losing the eye; however, in less than a month, thanks to the treatment of the medical team of San Vicente Foundation Hospital, the tumor decreased by 80% and he has a great possibility to keep the eye.
He is already 1 year old and only needs one more chemotherapy session to start a new life with his family. Like him, about 200 children in Colombia and some neighbor countries have been benefitted from this specialized retinoblastoma program of San Vicente Foundation Hospital.
Ocular cancer identified as retinoblastoma occurs in 1 of 15.000 children under 3 years, most cases like Thiago’s are detected by the care of their parents but if this disease is not detected and treated on time children not only have the risk of losing their eyes buy their own life. San Vicente Foundation’s purpose is to allow many children to have a perfect vision during a long life.
