As the title defines it, this is Daniel, a little 3-year-old boy diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma, a type of ocular cancer in which both eyes are affected and, if not treated in time, can generate the total loss of vision.
From Guayaquil, Ecuador, where Daniel lives with his family, his mother Alejandra met the Retinoblastoma´s program at the Children´s Hospital San Vicente Fundacion in Medellin, one of the most specialized in Latin America, that she was in search of a place that would provide him care of high quality for the treatment of her child needed, since in his country he didn´t have an advanced procedures for this type of cancer and the urgency of his son did not allow waiting.
At the age of one year and two months, the doctors detected that Daniel had an abnormal reddish color and at this time he was diagnosed with retinoblastoma; He was in treatment in his country for 7 months and when they saw that it was not enough, in addition to having lost one of her eyes, after that they family decided to seek resources through social media campaigns and 3 months later they managed to collect enough to travel to Colombia.
Here in our Hospital, they were received by the entire team of specialists with open arms and they began to be part of the program. Of 5 programmed intra-arterial chemotherapy procedures, only 3 were enough for Daniel to recover his vision and the cancer didn´t metastasize.
Thanks to your help, more children like Daniel who visit us from other countries and can access the high quality care of our specialists. Now Daniel travels with his mother Alejandra every two months to receive his treatment and the improvement that he has had during the 9 months that he has been with the Children's Hospital has been evident. Today he is a much more cheerful and sociable child, and every day he shows more interest in learning and fulfilling his dreams. The doctors, nurses and their whole family, highlight that he is a very naughty and receptive child, he loves to paint and dance, and he promises to be better every day.
