4,040 Animals Were Helped in the last Quarter!

By Alejandro Vazquez | Program Manager

Dear Supporters,

Every donation to this project has an amazing impact in Animal Welfare. This report details the massive impact Coco’s Animal Welfare and its partners make in the state of Quintana Roo. from the resident animals to the ones affected in natural disasters in other locations.

The passion and commitment of Coco’s team has a big impact, not only in Playa del Carmen, but in further places where the help is needed, besides the great regular work during this quarter were they helped 4,040 animals – they supported in partnership with IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) the affected pets of a flooded community.

During the period of April to June, Coco’s Animal Welfare in collaboration with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) completed 2,428 Spay and Neuter Surgeries in Playa del Carmen. They completed these surgeries to support the control of stray dogs and cat’s populations in Playa del Carmen and surrounding areas. The Outreach campaign represent a big challenge for the control of these populations in the peripheral areas of the city as there are a large number of owners that do not have their animals spayed and neutered for different reasons, some of which are: the lack of transportation to take them for veterinary care; low income families that cannot afford the treatments or surgeries; taboo; and ignorance on the benefits of caring about their animals.

During the month of June, IFAW and Coco’s Animal Welfare supported the community of Chumpon after the flooding that left over 150 houses affected, 1612 animals that included dogs, cats, pigs, rabbits and birds, were supported with veterinary care and food.

From the 1st of January to the 11th of August we have been raising funds for Coco’s massive 6 day campaign. This campaign will have a potential impact of more than a 1,000 dogs and cats in Playa del Carmen in their first 4 days. This year VIDAS has moved their Spay and Neuter campaign to Puerto Rico, where in September 2017 a huge Hurricane named Maria affected many people and animals.

The good news is that the experience with VIDAS in previous years and with the support from other local organizations, Coco´s has decided to take up the challenge and continue with the annual campaigns here in Playa Del Carmen. The aim is to keep controlling the population of dogs and cats in the area in partnership with IFAW, Planet Pethood International Puerto Morelos, and other vets, using the support of donations and volunteers will make this campaign a success.

During the Summer course at Contando con un Amigo school the GVI Volunteers and Coco’s Animal welfare staff participated in a challenge to fundraise for the upcoming campaign, the activity was a plastic cleaning walk around the dirt road that connects the community with the paved road, in this 1 hour walk for about a kilometre, these 12 children, 1 Coco’s Animal Welfare staff, 9 GVI Volunteers and 2 GVI staff members collected 715 plastic bottles, divided in 6 full plastic bags, besides creating awareness on plastic pollution the funded money will support the Coco´s Animal Welfare Campaign of August.

In total this quarter the number of animals helped were 4,040, a significant increase from the 1612 animals supported in the flood in chumpon.

The Sustainable Development Goals impacted by this program are the SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 15: Life on Land and SDG 17: Partnership for the Goals.

It will contribute to SDG 3: Health and Well-being by keeping rabies out of the region with vaccine prevention and by diminishing the number of stray dogs and cats that can carry diseases and plagues to human communities.

It will contribute to SDG 15: Life on Land by diminishing the number of cats and dogs in the streets that can kill and hunt local species, like birds, lizards, possums and other small mammals.

It will contribute to SDG 17: Partnership for the goals by promoting the collaboration between local rescuers, shelters, clinics, government and other NGO´s.

Thank you all for your continous generosity!

With Gratitude,

The Mexico Animal Welfare Team
