Animal welfare initiatives

By Maisie Mayne | Fundraising Intern

Coco's Animal Welfare is a non-profit organisation based in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. It is dedicated to improving the lives of animals in the Riviera Maya Region. The organisation focuses on spay and neuter programs, rescue efforts and community education to address the challenges of stray and neglected animals. At the heart of Coco’s Animal Welfare is its permanent low-cost spay and neuter clinic. Staffed by two full-time veterinarians, the clinic offers sterilization services to control the population of cats and dogs. This initiative not only reduces the number of stray animals but also promotes healthier communities.Another key program is the Dog Rescue Support Program which assists individuals and groups who rescue street dogs, providing them with low-cost medical care and support. By empowering rescuers to take responsibility for these animals, the program facilitates the transition of stray dogs into permanent, loving homes.

Dogs aren't the only focus, in order to manage and care for feral cat populations, Coco’s Animal Welfare has implemented the Cat Café program. This involves trapping resort cats for spaying or neutering, vaccinating them against rabies, and providing parasite treatments. Designated feeding areas, known as Cat Cafés, are established on hotel grounds, encouraging cats to congregate away from guest areas and reducing human-animal conflicts.

Recognising importance of community involvement, the organization engages in outreach programs to educate the public about responsible pet ownership and humane animal treatment. These efforts aim to foster a culture of compassion and proactive care for animals within the local community.Since its inception, Coco’s Animal Welfare has made significant strides in animal welfare. Celebrating over a decade of service, the organization has sterilized nearly 40,000 animals and rescued more than 1,200 kittens and 400 dogs. These efforts have substantially reduced the number of stray animals and improved the overall well-being of the community. Coco’s Animal Welfare continues to be a beacon of hope for animals in the Riviera Maya. Through its comprehensive programs and unwavering commitment, the organization not only addresses immediate animal welfare needs but also works towards sustainable, long-term solutions. Support from donors and volunteers remains crucial to the ongoing success and expansion of these vital initiatives.
