School for 600 children victim of war in DR Congo

Our country is experiencing a 3rd wave of the Covid-19 pandemic (with the Delta variant). Barrier measures have been reactivated throughout the national territory and the curfew has been reinstated. Some hospitals are overwhelmed. The statistics of those affected are increasing: 48,128 cases are counted, for 29,497 healings and 1,023 deaths. Apart from Kinshasa, our capital, our province of South Kivu and that of North Kivu are the most affected.

Our School, Glenn Paige Nonkilling School, suffers the full brunt of the consequences of this pandemic since it lives mainly on the resources of trafficking in people and goods generated by our boat on the traffic on Lake Tanganyika between Burundi, the DR Congo and Tanzania. However, this traffic is currently almost non-existent following border closures.

Being closed until now, we plan to open our School with the next school year (2021/2022) next October. Preparations are advanced.

Despite these difficult times, construction continues: the different classrooms are separated by walls and we are in the process of buying various construction materials (bricks, cements, iron, boards for the roof) in Uvira to be able to transport them. to our construction site (Kazimia).

The health crisis linked to the Covid-19 pandemic continues to affect our country. The second wave of contamination manifested itself last December and was the cause of the closure of all schools in the country from December 2020 until the end of February 2021.

Currently, the statistics are stable: there are 27,794 cases, 25,355 recoveries and 726 deaths; our province (South Kivu) is one of the most affected in the country.

The borders with our close neighbors (Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania) remain closed, which greatly reduces the traffic of our boat on Lake Tanganyika. It can only sail on the Congolese coast. This significantly reduces our revenue.

As we cannot fully assume the barrier measures for our students (hand washing with soaps, wearing masks and the required distancing), our School, Glenn Paige Nonkilling School, remains closed for this school year following the consequences of this pandemic; moreover, the school year is already drawing to a close.

Despite the harmful consequences of this pandemic, our donors continued to honor us with their beneficent and generous donations, which allowed us to collect important construction materials (bricks, reinforcing steel, cement, planks, gravel and stones). Three masons are at work, at the moment, to complete the edifice.
