Project Report | Apr 4, 2025
School Construction (36)

By Mabwe Lucien | Project Leader

The security situation remains worrying in our region and negatively affects the entire social, administrative and economic life of the populations.

The advance of the M23 rebels supported by Rwanda and the capture of the cities of Goma (North Kivu) and Bukavu (South Kivu) have thrown the Eastern provinces (South Kivu and North Kivu in particular) into an unprecedented crisis.

The defeat and flight of government forces before the M23 rebels have greatly discredited the Congolese army.

In the province of South Kivu and in particular in Uvira and Fizi, this army has been replaced by local nationalist indigenous fighters called "WAZALENDO" who have no civic or military training. No administrative, judicial or financial services are operational. All sectors of social and economic life are at a standstill.

The management of immense territories by these Wazalendo elements poses problems. There are more than 350,000 inhabitants of Fizi and Uvira who have found refuge elsewhere. 37 students from our school have found refuge in Tanzania with their parents as well as a teacher.

The construction materials that we have since purchased are well stored and jealously guarded so that the situation can calm down.

We ask our various donors to remember us, to continue to honor us with their precious donations and to plead, with all the authorities they can reach, for peace in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
