Survey 2023:Going door-to-door to listen and learn

Dear Valued Partner:

This project began as a COVID pivot and now has become part of our backbone programming - due to you! Thank you for making a difference to 1,500+ mothers in rural Kenya who support an additional 7,500+ children.

At EACF, we believe that those closest to the problems are best positioned to solve them. EACF conducts an intensive survey annually going door-to-door to sit, listen and learn. This recent survey of the mothers participating in the Seedlings & Soap project tells us that:

Across Meru County, Kenya, food stores are empty when normally there should be a 2-3 month reserve.
Families do not have resiliency for future shocks following the historic drought, and the economic impacts of COVID and high inflation.
Two-thirds of the women participants earn less than $1 per day.
Almost all (93%) owe school fees and won’t be able to clear them before the new school year in January.

We also learned, however, that this program is a big success for families. Despite these hardships, every woman we spoke to had a consistent message:

Growing food at home from this project helped their children access nutritious fruits and vegetables they would not otherwise have eaten.
This program strengthened their community.
