Dena contacted us after she was sexually assaulted in the Ukraine where she was volunteering in a humanitarian capacity.
She was driving when two men jumped into the car she was driving as she was waiting for an old man to cross the road. One held a gun to her from the passenger side, the other sat behind her in the back seat with a rope around her neck. They instructed her to drive to an isolated area.
The assaults were violent and quick. They fled on foot. Dena told us she doesn't know how long she sat in the car after that terrified and in shock, but also surprised she was alive, and that they didn't take the car.
We provided emotional support, helped her understand what her options were for medical and law enforcement response, and explained how to do self-collection of evidence while she decided what steps she wanted to take.
Dena was grateful she could confide in someone and decided all she wanted to do was come home. She told the group she was volunteering with that she had an emergency at home and had to leave. She changed her return ticket.
Once back home Dena continued to contact us and we let her know what resources were available to her for a medical follow-up and counseling.
With your support, Dena is on her way to recovery.
Thank you for helping American sexual assault victims abroad!
