Ariana was working remotely for her company since covid hit in March. Feeling stir crazy, she did research and found out she could travel to Panama and still work remotely.
She took all the necessary precautions getting a covid test, wearing a mask and social distancing. She booked a little casita on the beach. The get-away was glorious and Ariana felt renewed.
On the last night she woke up to a man on top of her. She tried to scream but he had a knife and threatened to kill her.
The man sexually assaulted Ariana then left. Ariana froze from fear in her bed until the sun came up in the morning. The man had a mask on so she could not identify him.
She did some research and found Pathways. Ariana emailed our crisis email and a Pathways advocate gave her the resources available in Panama and helped her understand the medical, law enforcement and legal options she could access.
Distraught and afraid, Ariana decided she wanted to come home to a rape crisis center in the USA since she was scheduled to fly home that afternoon. We helped her locate a rape crisis center in her town that she could access for services as soon as she got home.
Ariana is doing well. She is in counseling and is beginning to understand that the attack was not her fault. She is strong and determined to move forward.
Having someone to help guide American sexual assault victims in the aftermath of an attack is critical for their health and wellbeing whatever action they choose to take, or not to take.
Without donors like you this would not be possible. Thank you. The Pathways Team
