Learning outdoors for children of the favelas

In December, we kickstarted our summer camp at the SINAL campus. We have been working closely with the children of our team members of the local community of Santo Antonio. SINAL is more than just a space for work; it is a community, and we are committed to supporting every aspect of it, especially the well-being and education of the children. The seven dedicated ladies that work in our jackfruit processing factory within SINAL, each have children of varying age groups. Every year they face a challenge during the summer holidays as schools are closed, pressuring them to hire someone for their children’s care. Seizing this opportunity, we began a sensorial educational program, offering a safe and enriching environment for these youngsters.

Our program focuses on developing their sensory abilities, encouraging them to perceive the world around them not only through their eyes but also through touch, hearing, and taste. On the second day, we focused on observing nature,  body language, and enhancing communication skills, with 4 more sessions scheduled until the end of January.

This year, we want to extend this program to more children in the Santo Antonio community, when we have the necessary resources with your support.

The Learning Journey:

In our first phase, we practiced the "Appreciation Gaze," inviting the young adults to look closely at the beauty and potential within themselves, their community in the Santo Antonio neighborhood, and their shared dreams. In the second phase, rather than dictating a path, we asked these young adults to envision the future they desire for their community. Their dreams resonated with the values of clean neighborhood, recycling, and sustainability. 

Recognizing the unique talents of each young adult, we are now poised to turn these dreams into action. Through collaboration and active citizenship, they will take the lead in mobilizing their community for a hands-on project that brings their dreams to life.
