Small steps - Education for single mothers

2022 is coming to an end. Thank you for supporting our project Pasos Pequeñitos this year!

The daycare centre Pasos Pequeñitos allows single parents to pursue their education and/or profession. The daycare centre is a calm place in the midst of the bustling city Tegucigalpa in Honduras. Pasos Pequeñitos supports families that would otherwise not have access to professional childcare. Currently, our daycare centre “Pasos Pequeñitos” hosts 20 children and is at its full capacity. Honduran Independence Day

On September 15^th 2022, Honduras celebrated 201 years of independence from Spanish colonial force. To mark this occasion, we provide a digital excursion on Honduran history, society, and the Honduran struggle for independence on our Global Learning platform. We hope this finds you well and that you are having a good summer! Here are the latest updates on PEN PAPER PEACE’s project Pasos Pequeñitos in Honduras:

 1. News from the daycare centre

Presently, our daycare centre in Honduras is hosting 15 children, with 4 more children to join the centre in fall. Our partner organisation nph Honduras reports very positive responses from parents that value the centre’s flexible opening hours, allowing the single parents to pursue their education and/or profession.

 2. Meet Marcia from Pasos Pequeñitos

To give you more impressions of our work at Pasos Pequeñitos, we’d like to introduce Marcia to you, the main educator of the daycare centre: Marcia started working with Pasos Pequeñitos in 2009. Growing up with a single mother herself and coherent difficulties, Marcia is moved by the stories of the single parents and tries to support them as much as she can. In particular, Marcia is invested in the development of our Montessori programme at Pasos Pequeñitos. Being able to see how children grow up with better opportunities, is what inspires Marica to do her work at Pasos Pequeñitos.

3. Writing competition

Last year we successfully hosted a writing competition for young students (10 to 14 years) in all our project countries (Haiti, Honduras, Nambia, Germany and Italy). We received many courageous and bright submissions that we are currently translating to share with you. To close this report, we would like to share a phrase from a 12-year old Honduran student: "In life there are a lot of obstacles and you think you won't be able to break them, but in life, if you set your mind to it, you can break them and I too can't do it. Never give up until you do it."
