Initial Solar Phase Installed

With the initial solar installation complete, the CHIPS mobile medical outreach offices, nurse’s station and the business development projects are all powered by the sun now! As we grow we hope to be able to power the entire clinic with solar.

Why?

First: the local electric supply can be very intermittent and the costs continue to rise. Power interruptions can be ruinous to temperature sensitive drug and supply storage. Drugs and test kits stored on site for HIV and malaria are all temperature sensitive. Damaged test kits can mean false positives of negatives for both HIV and malaria.

Second: failure of the local electric supply can (and have) wreak havoc on some of the sensitive business development projects. Local crawfish are caught in the surrounding dams and rivers and brought to a central holding tank during the week. The crawfish are collected once a week from the holding tank and transported Mbabane for sale. Power outages mean the holding tanks lose their aeration and oxygen and the crawfish die.

Third: as operating costs rise, there is less money available for providing health services to this impoverished area. Reducing reliance and money paid to the local electric company means we can continue to provide access to quality and compassionate health care!
