10 years of Abundance

By Team Abundance | Project Manager

This year marks exactly 10 years since we started Abundance. While the last few years have been quieter and we have not been as active as before, the heart of Abundance remains the same: to support communities, nurture hope, and respond where we can with compassion and commitment.
Key achievements over the past decade
  • Provided 95 Fuel Efficient Stoves- one per hosuehold
  • Established a community library at the Community Based Child Care Center to improve access to books and learning resources for children, youth, and community members in Mbando Village.
  • Set up a solar-powered e-Learning Center at Chilimba Day Secondary School, including renovated space, furniture, 8 laptops, 150 Keepods, and a RACHEL offline education device to provide access to educational content in an off-grid rural area.

  • Provided solar energy support for the e-Learning Center, helping overcome the challenge of no electricity, no internet, and limited mobile coverage in Mbando Village.

  • Supported youth through vocational skills and digital learning, enabling young people to access information on practical trades such as welding, soap making, and entrepreneurship through the e-Learning Center.

  • Trained two youth on carpentry and tailoring at a residential 6 months vocational training

  • Supported women and girls through sanitary napkin-making training, helping promote dignity, skills development, and practical knowledge among girls and women.

  • Developed the rice and maize mill project, in partnership with the Mbando community and women’s group, to reduce the distance people travel for milling and to support local income generation.

  • Empowered the Talandira Women’s Co-operative through the rice mill, enabling women to manage a community enterprise, support local farmers, and create a co-operative fund for future community initiatives.

  • Provided a communal bicycle ambulance, improving emergency transport options for a rural community with limited services.
  • Supported over 100 elderly community members with blankets, showing that Abundance’s work included care and welfare for vulnerable people, not only infrastructure and training.

  • Planted trees and promoted environmental conservation, linking community development with care for nature and climate resilience.

  • Piloted a waste-to-energy bioenergy cooker, contributing to cleaner cooking solutions and reduced reliance on fuelwood in a context where biomass use contributes to deforestation. Participated in the Scottish Government Climate Justice Innovation Fund bioenergy project, “Sustainable Clean Cooking Facilities to boost resilience to climate change in Malawi,” implemented with the University of Glasgow, Fab Engineering, LUANAR, LEAD, and Abundance. The project received £122,583 and aimed to develop sustainable biofuel production using organic waste for clean and efficient cooking.

  • Supported COVID-19 community response efforts, including mask-making, donating masks to the local health centre in Mbando, providing a handwashing bucket to an under-five clinic, and giving masks to youth working in Abundance projects.

We want to do more, and your support is needed for this. Donate at the GlobalGiving page so that we can continue supporting communities in Malawi.

Thank you!
