Summary

This project will provide 20 laptops to assist highly-talented, low-income high school students in the USAP program to research and apply online for fully funded higher education opportunities at colleges and universities around the world. Education Matters is currently working with a USAP cohort of 41 high-achieving, low-income students in Zimbabwe who are applying to start college in 2017. We need laptops for students to be able to complete online applications and do college research online.

Challenge

USAP students by definition are highly-talented students who lack the finances to attend colleges and universities at home or abroad. One of the they biggest challenges they face in the admissions process is lack of access to computers and thus to Internet, essential for online applications and college research. USAP students also need to increase their computer literacy. Currently Education Matters has four laptops available for our cohort of 41 USAP students.

Solution

This project will bridge the gap between the immediate demand for computers by high-achieving, low-income students in Zimbabwe and the lack of current access for them to apply to top universities around the world. With a bank of 20 laptops which Education Matters will store and maintain securely at our offices, we will be able to ensure that all students we work with can have adequate access to online information and applications.

Long-Term Impact

USAP is a program which invests in the future not only of individual talented students, but also more widely in their potential to impact their families, communities and countries. With a 16 year track record in hand, we are confident that the long-term impact of our work with USAP is to transform lives and allow high-achieving, low-income students to live their dreams and make positive change.
