Water Project December 2023,

Thanks to you, in 2023, this community now has access to clean and safe drinking water. Additionally, our local partners trained community health workers and local leaders to disseminate positive hygiene and household sanitation messages to their respective community members

The people here, especially women and girls, used to walk up to two hours to collect water for their families. The water wasn't safe to drink and often made people sick. Thanks to your help, people here are walking significantly less every day to collect water. Most importantly, the water they bring home each day is safe enough to drink.

Darfur Women Network (DWN) would like to thank you for your compassionate support and your generous donations! Thank You again! Without your generous donation, DWN couldn’t execute the Safe Stoves Project successfully to benefit the survivors of genocide and their families in refugees' camp in Chad.

The goal of the Water Containers Project in 2023 was to purchase and distribute 1000 containers- 1000 water containers to be purchased and distributed to refugee families - two containers per family. So far, your contribution enabled us to purchase 780 water containers and distribute to390 refugee families- Two containers per family. Please, continue your support to provide 220 containers more to achieve our goal.

Unfortunately, the survivors of genocide in Darfur who are living in refugee camps in Chad are still struggling to access basic needs. We need to improve the quality of life in the camp. The population of the Tolum camp is about 36,000 people. Many years ago, families in the camp used to grow crops to secure food for their children to help supplement the food portion that the World Food Program (WFP) provides to refugees in the camp. However, WFP has since reduced the food portion provided to refugees in the camp. This year, the Chadian community, which owns the agricultural land used by refugees in the camp, refused to allow the refugees to continue farming.

The food scarcity has led to 2,500 refugee families leaving the camp to seek agricultural land and permission for farming. They loaded their important belongings on donkeys and walked over 75 kilometers, uncertain of their destination and fate.

Our response to the issue of hunger in the camp:

The DWN team visited the refugees in their new settlement on the agricultural land the families had found. The families required immediate assistance due to a lack of food, waterproof sheets, and bar soap.

Fortunately, this challenge reflects the case study we provided to GlobalGiving when we applied for a grant. We also provided a proposed solution. We are grateful for the $10,000 grant approval, which helped our beneficiaries meet their essential needs.

As a result, 260 families received waterproof sheets, 540 families received 4 bar soap and 500 received food.

Families used the waterproof sheets from Darfur Women Network to make small tents. The tents are vital during the rainy season to keep dry and to keep their food supply from rotting. Bars of soap were given out to families, enabling them to maintain their dignity and hygiene. In addition to the waterproof sheets and bars of soap, each family received a 30-pound pound bag of millet.

Water Distribution 2023

Dear Darfur Women Network Family,

On behalf of Darfur Women Network, Inc, DWN, would like to express our gratitude for your generous donation and your passionate support. With your generosity and your support during this difficult time, the DWN has been able to provide essential services to the refugees from Darfur in Touloum camp in Chad.

With your contribution, DWN and its volunteers have provided drinking water and water containers for the survivors of genocide in Darfur, who are residents of the Darfur refugees’ camp in Chad. After a rainy season, our volunteers in the camp clean up the buried drinking water wells in the camp for years. However, this year, DWN has the plan to provide 1000 families with water containers (5 gallons).

We distributed 680 water containers; two water containers were given to each family. Now, we are looking forward to working with you to achieve our goals which are meeting the need of 1000 families, are you ready to help refugees from Darfur in refugees camp in Chad?

Why are water containers important?

The refugees retrieve water from wells in water containers. They use the same water container as water storage in the shelter. In the camp, there are no jobs and no income. 85% of the refugees are women and children. Thus, they can’t afford to purchase water containers. They have to melt the broken plastic water containers to weld the container holes. Water containers are still needed.

Current situation:

The fighting between two armed forces that was started on April 15th, is still going on.

• At least 427 people have been killed and over 3,700 injured due to the conflict.

• Prices of essential items are sharply increasing due to shortages.

• At least 11 health facilities have been attacked and many are no longer functional in Khartoum and Darfur States.

• Civilians are fleeing areas affected by fighting, including to Chad, Egypt, and South Sudan.

• Several humanitarian organizations have evacuated or relocated their staff from locations where operations are not currently feasible.

Displacement of civilians has been reported in the capital of Sudan and in Darfur.

We hope for peace and stability soon and assess the need of people and work with our volunteers to serve our people who are affected by the consequence of the fighting. We praying for the safety of our volunteers, beneficiaries, our guard, and the women’s center. We don’t have information due to the absence of the Internet and communication as well as the insecurity situation.

We appeal to you to extend a helping hand to provide food, medicine, and relief supplies for our people in Sudan. We ask you to pray that God lifts this disaster from our country and people as soon as possible, and we appreciate all your support. May God bless your heart.
