Protect 30 girl children at risk of prostitution

New schoolyear is coming back!

Time flies so fast! Three months have elapsed and today we are happy to send you our latest updates in Where Dreams Bloom - the program aims to protect children aged 6 -18 and are daughters or sisters of women earning living from prostitution.

One month ago, we took the children to Ninh Thuan, which is a province in the South Central Coast of Vietnam for three days. This is the second consecutive year we organize the trip, which aims to give the children opportunities to extend learning outside classrooms, to get away from home and step outside of their usual routine; more importantly, they will become an more independent and responsible young person when traveling without their parents or tutors. During the trip, we explored many places of the province, such as: Cham tower - the characteristics of culture of the province built by ancient Champa people, grape farms, spectacular natural scenery and beautiful white sandy beaches along the city.

The summer has ended is also the time when another schoolyear coming back and Where Dreams Bloom enrolls new more members into the program. This year, we welcome another two more members: V. (17 years old) and N. (11 years old). V. is studying hard to prepare for university exam next year while N. will start her fifth-grade in this school year. By participating in the program, they will receive school fees, uniforms, school supplies, monthly follow-ups, training and many other initiatives to enhance their life skills, self-esteem and confidence.

We also would like to share with you another good news, is that T. and A., who has received the support of the program since 2015 has excellently passed the university exam and is going to start the first semester this September. They still receive our follow-ups regularly when entering university so we could assist them if they need help.

Last week, our latest activity - Celebrating new schoolyear just happened to award scholarship to the children, connect parents and children in the program through team-building games/discussions and introduce new members to others. After five years together, we are very happy to see shyness and distance among the participants are gradually being replaced by smiles and conhesion.

Since 2015, the program has supported 31 girls to continue going to school. They are from six to 18 years old, from first grade to twelfth grade. Six of them already graduated from high school and five of them enrolled in universities or colleges with different majors.

2015: 16 children

2018: 29 children

2019: 31 children

Education is important for a child. But not all children could go to school. With the girls in our program, some of them must work to help their families, or stay home to care for younger siblings. Other girls simply don’t have the money for educational fees or school uniforms. As a result, the children’s future must give way to survival priorities of their families. Luckily, they are still in school and continue to be thanks to AAT’s program to support high-risk children.

Another school year ended

All of the children continue their studies well and succeed their final examination, to enter in the next classes. 2 of the girls also succeeds their examination to enter the university next year.

We increased the follow up capacity by hiring 2 young Vietnamese volunteers studying in the Social Science University. They are young and our children like them. They also are more open to share thinks about their live.

During the quarter, we supported a surgery of the colon of one 10 years old girl. We also helped one mother to pay her treatment for her stomach disease.

All the children continue to participate in extracurricular trainings, the last one was about “Say no to plastic” and the pollution in general. The next, in June 1^st will be about climate changes and challenges. Later, in July, it will be the time to bring our beautiful flowers to the sea for 3 days.

This program is very loved by Vietnamese and a new TV documentary of 55 minutes, planned to be broadcasted in November 2019, is in progress.

For us, the summer holidays will be the time to evaluate our girls one by one, to measure their progress and their psychological stabilization.

We have a new project called "HER" we will make short movies where children tell some part of their life. they will be free to choose their subject and it will not necessarily be connected to our project or their situation.

Unfortunately, everything is not perfect and beautiful. Two sisters (aged 9 to 14) living with their grandparents and their younger brother, begin to experience difficulties when the grandparents begin to get sick. Health is expensive and many people do not have the ability to pay without borrowing money from illegal brokers, Forcing the family into debts that they will not be able to repay. In several cases, with the threat of killing family members, the brokers force young women and teenagers to act as a prostitute for years to reimburse the debt and the expensive interests for the family. Before our support, the children had dropped out of school, and they lived with their grandparents under a bridge. The children do not know their father and the mother has been incarcerated for a long time. In regard of their fragile situation, we decide to support health insurance for grandparents and we will also to support the school fees for the boy, although it is not our target.

Another similar case also concerns 2 sisters (10 and 16 years old). They stay with their parents and they share a 10-meters square house with 6 other men. The first danger shared by the mother is that the men sleeping at home completely nude and the parents looking their girls in perpetual danger. The mother just leaving prostitution to stay at home to protect the children from risks. Recently, the father was sick and they need to borrow two hundred dollars from illegal brokers to pay the hospital. Because they have not the capacity to reimburse the debt, the brokers proposed them to prostitute their beautiful 16 years old daughter to participate in the reimbursement of the debt. We have decided to absorb the debt by paying the full amount and we will also pay a health insurance for the parents.

By these two examples, our decision to provide more support to these families is not included in our activities and budget, but it is the only way to ensure protection of our teen girls. In general, the girls make good progresses but their life still very fragile.
