Displaced families may die this winter

Afghans remain the largest refugee population of concern to UNHCR in Asia. The volatile security situation continues to drive displacement. An additional 390,940 people were forced to flee their homes during the period January to December 2017 (UNHCR).

Even after fleeing their homes to seek safety, Afghans are languishing in appalling conditions, and fighting for their survival. They continue to lack adequate shelter, food, water, health care, let alone opportunities to pursue education and employment.

Action for Development (AfD) remains committed to responding to this crisis, and ensuring that we meet the urgent needs of those displaced.

Local staff in Kabul have surveyed the premises where displaced families are located. A camp in Parwan has over 40 families displaced from various northern provinces. All families in this camp live in miserable conditions. Eleven of these families are headed by women. They have lost their adult male family member due to war while leaving their homes. Widows with 4 to 6 children suffer the most. The harsh winter season has added to their problems and threatens survival.

To attend to the urgent health needs of these families, AfD provided a mobile health clinic. A doctor and a nurse visited the camp and provided emergency health diagnosis and treatment. AfD mobilised personal funds to buy medicine for the sick and vulnerable. Over 120 people - of whom 50 were women, and 65 were children - received treatment for acute respiratory infection.

During 2017, AfD collected about USD 200 for this winterization project on GlobalGiving. With this amount, we can buy 9 bags of coal, supporting 8 of the 40 families.

To provide coal for each family in this camp, we require an additional USD 1000.

Families in Afghanistan need your help

Afghanistan remains among the world’s poorest nations. An estimated 8.1 million people are in need of some form of humanitarian assistance (UNOCHA).

The security situation in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate. From January to September 2017, almost 250,000 individuals fled their homes due to conflict (UNOCHA). Thirty out of the 34 provinces had recorded some forced displacement; 60% of those displaced were children under 18 (UNOCHA). Inadequate shelter, food insecurity, limited access to sanitation and health facilities, and lack of protection, leave the affected families living in perilous conditions.

Each year Afghanistan experiences very cold winters, for which those who have been displaced are ill prepared. Heavy snowfall, freezing weather, and avalanches are common in Afghanistan’s mountainous areas. Some areas are completely cut-off during the winter months - often for as many as seven months at a stretch.

Action for Development (AfD) has been offering support to Afghans in need during the winter months. Northern Afghanistan's Badakhshan province was particularly badly hit last winter, with many people dying as a result of the extreme weather conditions. Thanks to the donations from the Global Giving community, AfD was able to provide 96 households (around 700 people) in Badakhshan with locally made, multipurpose wood stoves and fuel. With these stoves, the families were able to heat their homes, cook food, and boil water throughout the winter.

Without support from the international community, many families in Afghanistan will not survive. AfD aims to provide further support for families in need this winter. Just $10 is enough to provide a family with winter socks; $20 USD will provide winter blankets; $150 will provide a family of up to 9 individuals with enough heating, cooking and hot water for a month.

Afghanistan still needs our help

Afghanistan faces serious humanitarian and environmental crises, according to United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), 8.1 million people in Afghanistan are in need of some sort of humanitarian assistance. The already vulnerable population of Afghanistan is being exposed to greater risks of violence, increasingly being forced to flee their homes and livelihoods and face high levels of malnutrition, all in a country where 70% of the population lives in chronic poverty. As one of the world's least developed countries the country and its people need the support of the international community to provide that assistance.

Each year Afghanistan experiences very cold winters, for which the many internally displaced and people living in poverty are ill prepared. Some of the most remote areas in Afghanistan are completely cut-off during the winter months with efforts needed to make the communities more resilient to the extreme weather conditions.

AfD has been offering support to local populations in Badakhshan, in the form of provision of locally made, multipurpose wood stoves and a supply of fuel.

Last year AfD's winterisation project in Badakhshan benefited 96 households (approximately 700 people) making their winter experience a little more bearable, the heaters enabling recipient families to heat their homes, cook food and boil water throughout the winter months. These contributions by AfD are only made possible due to the kind donations from the Global giving community.

AfD aims to support even more people in 2017 as Afghanistan's population continues to suffer as a result of political conflict and environmental crises in the region, leading to increased displacement of populations.

Just $10 is enough to provide a family with winter socks and $20 USD will provide winter blankets and $150 will provide a family of up to 9 individuals with enough heating, cooking and hot water for a month.

This project relies on the continuing support from several Swiss cantons and the generous donations from individuals on the GlobalGiving Platform.
