Every little counts
By Memory Mundia | Project Coordinator
On Friday evening we hosted an early St Patrick's Day-themed fundraiser for local volunteers and backpackers to raise funds for our Zambezi Sawmills School project. Participants paid to play rounds bingo, and could also have face painting for a donation. There was a reasonably small turnout given the current low season for both volunteers and backpackers; but we managed to raise a total of 493.50K/$49 over the evening. Whilst this seems small in respect to how much more we still have to raise, every amount collected will add up toward the construction of something significant for Zambezi Sawmills.
On this note this gives us a reflection on how Zambezi Sawmills looked like 4 years ago. A school without proper security and not enough water for kids. Today the face of Zambezi Sawmills has changed, we have added an additional space for learning, provided clean water, a food garden and now have 24/7 security. It is because of small actions like the events above that we are able to do big things.
Thank you all who made this possible.

More classroom space and fundraising on ground
By Memory Mundia | Project Coordinator
The percentage of out of school children in a country shows what proportion of children are not currently participating in the education system and who are, therefore, missing out on the benefits of school. In Zambia, 15% of children of official primary school ages are out of school , which also considers the proportion of children out of school by different characteristics wherever data is available.
Some of the reasons is due to poverty and luck of enough school classroom blocks, few teachers in the schools hence they turn away children. And Zambezi Sawmills is one of such a school. As the new school year starts in January 2018; Zambezi Sawmills community school just like any other school received a lot of applicants who want to start grade one next year; due to lack of classes it turned away some of the children. These children's ages fall between 6-10years.
African Impact has been pushing to finish of the classroom block to allow the school enroll more children. We have been holding fundraisers on ground. One of them been a throwback 90’s and so far on ground we have raised $98. Once this classroom is built it will help create more space and time for the students and the school as whole.

Zambezi Sawmills - More improvements complete
By Memory | Project Leader
New Shelter being errected
We are still busy fundraising online and with individual donors on the ground to be able to complete the new classroom at Zambezi Sawmills. In the meantime we have been busy with 2 overseas school teams....
This year Zambezi Sawmills was privileged to have two Tag Rugby groups working during their tour namely Mill Hill School and Conisborough groups respectively. The students have been busy coaching tag rugby in the local seven schools in Livingstone in the mornings and in the afternoon after all the trainings they were busy with community work at Zambezi Sawmills Community School. While there they worked on extending the shelter, building a bore house and doing some gardening. Once the shelter is finished, it will act as a temporal class room. This shelter is also used for reading clubs and teacher one on one learning system with those students that are slow learners.
